English assassin

I'm pretty sure this is just me but I thought I'd ask. The basic things in the game, like distances and speeds over the ground, are all modelled exactly as in real life, is that right? Or have they been tweaked for playability? maybe game time runs at twice normal time or something?
The reason I ask is the battles are all over quite quickly, and especially the time from sighting the enemy battle line and making contact is quite short.
I was looking out of the train window today at the southern English countryside (fairly flat with rolling hills) and it seemd to me that, all other things being equal, you would be able to see a fair sized body of men at least a mile away, and maybe two. (Obviously not so far if they were all laying down behind a hedge or something but if they were marching about in formation I don't think I'm far wrong.)
Two bodies of men a mile apart walking towards each other fairly briskly, but trying to stay at least roughly in formation, would take about ten minutes to come into contact, maybe a bit more. But not in the game.
So does the game run faster than real time?
