Does a leader's command rating play a big role in determining a battle's result?

every two command stars equals +1 Attack and Defense.
- within 50 meters of the general, +1 morale for every star
- beyond 50 meters of the general, +1 morale for every two stars

so, yes, command is a huge factor. Also, a commanding general's V&Vs can have a large impact. A general with a -9 morale vice afflicts his whole army with the same penalty. While a general with +6 morale means his whole army will accept higher casualties before(if) they rout. A general's +valor virtues only affect his personal unit.

The King's Command Rating will only affect the battle if he's involved. Otherwise the highest star general per battle determins the attack/defense/moral bonuses.

How do I determine 50 meters? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Mate , when you first witness the swiss in late with there nine star general with expert defender, it is sight to strike fear into the heart of your armies. The amount of times my armies return decimated are far to many to remember.

A general with good command can just about swing a battle as long as your troop are at least medium-ish, not peasants and other less glamourous units because they won't stand that long anyway.

I heard someone say that 50 meters is approx. half as far as an arrow can shoot. Also, you will see your soldiers' info blurb saying encouraged by the general when he's within range.

I want to add to Motorhead's post that it seems that every odd numbered star gives + 1 attack and every even numbered star gives + 1 defense. So for every even numbered star the equavalent of +1 valour (except for the morale bonus) is added to the unit, and this is the way it is represented. But the matter is confusing to say the least.

I should check this, because I have never heard about this until recently, and I was quite surprised by it, as you can notice http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif .

I remeber once in NTW as the Prussian, I opened an Eastern front against France as it seemed Britian was almost dead and Spain was getting pulverized. I won a string of defensive victories, my guy got the Expert Defender vice, and I thought I could hold my own... Until A Napolean came 9 Stars and Expert attacker My army was smashed to pieces. I bet he would have driven right to my capital had the loyalty in Britian not been so bad causing loyalist revolts, thus he returned to Britian.
