is it just me or are the Romans in RTW going to be like the Vikings in VI. Crap cav and amazing OP inf. Obviously, they won't have naval dominance in the begining and all the rest but still there is a close similarity there. Just here for the historical view of our esteemed members of this forum http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif

No naval domininance?you kidding right?Although Carthage had Quinquiremes,Roman ships, the Biremes, are roughly as powerful as the Quinquiremes. The Romans became the dominant force in the mediterranean after carthago fell.

Before, actually. Their invention, a plank with a spike at one end, gave them a considerable advantage during the 1st Punic war. Its name translates the 'crow' I think.

If RTW has starting periods like MTW (early, high, late) the Romans should start with naval dominance in every period except early.

roman cavalry as seen in the videos, don't seem to be so poor, Praetorian Lanceraii (i think they are that) seem to be as powerful as Chiv knights.

Well, until the stirrup found it's way into Europe, cavalry tended to be on the light side.

About Roma, for some reason the Navy never really took off. Not until Constantinople was alone were the fleets an important arm.

After the destruction of Carthage there was no need of a powerful fleet, maybe only to go against Mithridates' Pontic pirateers in the Black Sea.

Anyway, Roman ships got smashed by the much larger and more advanced fortified Carthaginian ships, but Romans solved this by taking their advantage on land on board, namely by developing a boarding plank. Their marines were much, much better at close combat than the Carthaginian sailors (as good as Romans on land) and so the Carthaginians were beat.

There was a mounted wing of the Praetorians once in a while called Lanciarii, but we know absolutly nothing about their ability in combat. IIRC they were composed of Germans which were considered to be far more loyal to their chosen leader than other folks...

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif Cavalry was just fine before the stirrups. As a whole, Romans sucked at cavalry. Send them up against any one with decent cavalry, and the Romans will lose, cavalry vrs. cavalry.
