When using mounted archers and I want to run down some routing infantry, how can I get my cavalry to get in close and cut down the routers. I mean, I'm sure that my Sipahis of the Porte would be able to handle routing peasants in hand to hand, but they just shoot at the routers. Is there a way to toggle between melee and ranged combat without running out of ammunition?

Yup, I think the default is the alt button. Hold alt and click on who you want the archers to attack.

alt+left click to attack while ammo still left. And any old light cav will suffice. Din't worry about melee much(unless you have the old version where routers had a large charge bonus). They even might be better than med and heavys b/c they are faster and don't tire as quickly.

Another, better way is to double-click a spot that will make the cavalry run through the routing unit.

That will net more prisoners even with non-missile cavalry.

having the cav in 1 rank and loose formation is also good to spread the net as wide as possible and double click at the ends of the map.

a few huge nets this way will capture huge amounts of routers.

in this case don t forget to disable skirmish - gets frustrating if you forget and concentrate elsewhere on the battlefield http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif

so true.

I always turn my HAs to engage once the enemy is running.

also, if they are close to the enemy, sometimes they will turn to engage by default.
