A nice unit... though i would have prefferred to see a new unit type such as the Slingers or Archers.

Still a good unit. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Amazing ---

"while those further back can protect the front ranks by angling their pikes to deflect missles."

They are going to include this aspect of the phalanx http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif Way to go CA... that is a huge +

As a Hellenistic style warrior he looks really good. Love the Phrygian helmet and his Syctho-steppe long hair.

I just wish there was a way to get the Sarissa weilders to grip their pikes w/2 hands.

At the com, every pro 'fantasy' person is bitching about how boring this unit is. I like it.

Damn this buggy unit thing is starting to piss me off http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-furious3.gif
Every time a new unit comes out I can never see it for some reason. I click to go in it and it brings to the latest prior one (dacian falxman this time) and when I click advance the things goes white as if it is gonna load a new one and just re-loads the falxmen. Ah well I guess im just gonna have to wait again to see the new unit.

Looks good, I don't know much about Pontic phalangites but what I do know is that they made up the main part of Mithridates of Pontus' armies, supported by imitation legionaries.

Or am I switching a few things here ...?

I agree. A great unit. I'm pleasently surprised to hear that they will take into consideration the deflection of projectiles by the rear ranks.

Use the link below, you just need to find out from someone what the new unit is, then insert different words from it where "HERE" currently is. For example this time the word "pontic" would have worked. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

You rang melord? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shogunshame.gif

... well... Might be the fact that I know very little on the specifics for the armies of Pontus, but this unit, really, looks fairly accurate.

Despite, of course, the fact that the sarissa was 6 to 6 1/2 meters long, not 4-5 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Nah, some people you can never please http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Just kidding. Looks decent, and they haven't their facts screwed up, I might add. There is still much "artistic license" in both the image and the description, but I would say they are very much into the realms of acceptable http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Alright, now we all want to see the Pharaonic Egyptian dissapear. Puff, gone If that happens, I promise to praise CA for eternity, even if they put Idefix and Obelix as Gaulish special units in game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

"Ok they are going to deflect arrows with pikes? That can't be very effective can it? "

Well, actually it can -- not as good as a big old shield mind you, but not bad.

A typical phalanx section had 256 pikes, only about 80 of which were level and in use at any one time. The remaining 176 would be held up and used to deflect arrows.

Think of it as trying to shoot arrows through the canopy of a very dense forest of trees.

Thanks alot Pyrrhus. It's so annoyinga nd frustrating when I hear that a new unit is out and I can't see it. And I can think of no reason why I would not be able but I just can't. It's happened for the past 5 at least. Maybe more of them. I never used to have this problem either

how well does it work, say against slings?

The Wizard
06-23-2004, 00:01
Nope, but sling pellets were also the greatest danger to Parthian and Armenian cataphracts.

shingenmitch2
06-23-2004, 16:36
Since the lead sling bullets are heavier than arrows, i guess they would be less affected. But I'd imagine the pikes do reduce the impact of a volley of sling shot signficantly. Basically you're trying to shoot thru several rows of loose picket fences. Odds are that you'll hit something eventually and then the shot will start to lose force.

Kraxis
06-23-2004, 16:55
He looks nice, but weren't these guys mentioed to wear very elaborate bronzearmour? So heavy or restricting that the pontic troops had a hard time maneuvering.

In any case a nice Hellenistic unit. Though of course the shieldarm does bug me.

Boohugh
06-23-2004, 20:25
Keep in mind that, as the description says, the phalanx can only stop light missile fire, if you are pummelling them with hundreds of archers, the unit will take heavy losses as many of the arrows will get through.

Maedhros

There is never enough protection from arrows.

Or enough arrows to fire at defending troops. Depending on how you look at it.

The army of Pontus was initallay beaten fairly easily. Their army had troops with bejeweled armore and such. I'm sure it was a sight.

Later, they began adapting Roman tactics and equipment. This might be where the legion style units come in.

They received advise I think from remnants of the Marion rebels? So if that civil war doesn't happen, can other nations hire "advisors?"

That is too complicated for a game isn't it???

I don't think the pikes would be effective in stopping sling shot. A lead ball hurtling through the air like that would probably break the pike.
