do you agree with this ?
because it seems to me my ships are doing much much better than pre-VI...
last night I had some 4 rounds of naval battles, and the outcomes were something like this:
killed ships - lost ships
7 3
6 4
4 2
5 2

the figures are approximate, i don't recall the exact ones.
however, the point is that overall I destroyed significantly more than I'd lost.
this was caravels vs baggalas, mostly, but they sunk some of my barques and i sunk a few of their dhows as well.
overall, i think i killed roughly twice as many ships as i lost.
this is high/hard.
i do remember that pre-VI my ships were getting sunk like logs...but i was quite happy with last night's results.
Oh, and most of the time it was 1 caravel vs 1 baggala, sometimes 2 caravels vs 1 baggala (I was dishing out ships faster than they could).

were you att or def? it makes a huge difference if you attack.

can't tell precisely. mostly attacking, but i didn't keep track of exactly how many places i was attacking, and there sometimes was more than one battle in a sea province, so it was hard to figure out hm, ok, i attacked with 5 ships in 3 provinces, the computer showed me 6 naval battle outcomes, so he must have attacked me once too.
i kept on attacking each turn as much as i could, and i can only assume that the AI turned to attack me as well occasionally.
besides, if this turn i decide to attack the AI and it decides to attack me as well, how can you tell if both decided attacking ?

as to the difference it makes, you're probably right, because of different ships's stats. but hey, who stopped the AI from attacking me once I went to war ? remember, this was for like 4 or 5 turns until I cleared the seas...

Personally I have found naval battles to be luck and mass numbers than actually logic.

Well good luck and here's to more ship killing http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif
