View Full Version : Man or Mouse? Mouse meself
Just got an optical mouse for the PC and the difference it makes in game is staggering. The sheer speed is so much faster it would stun you, and it allows a much quicker rotation of the game camera. I honesty believe my fighting ability has improved. Whereas a ball might stick to the mat or just get dirty, this wee gizmo is completely unfaltered as it goes across, giving me far more control. Anyone else had a similar experience, maybe even with other pieces of the PC like speakers or a keyboard?

An optical mouse does make a difference. When I first switched to an optical mouse, I found that it's size prevented me from being able to anchor my hand. I was playing FPS games at the time and had to re-learn shock-whoring and other things that had to do with aiming. I was able to get over it, but I hear that some "mouse masters" seen in various games prefer ball mice because of their weight. According to them, this gives a slight edge in movement control. It's never bothered me.

Yeah, I had a ball mouse that was like 5 years old IT ALWAYS STUCK I would have to like beat my mouse around for it to work, with my new optical mouse, my Sk1lLz are sharper.
Big difference

Just wait till you're in a critical battle & you get a little curly hair stuck over the optical sensor http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-furious3.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-computer.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif
Seriously, from my experience, a ball mouse is easier to keep working well than a badly designed optical mouse that lets those little hairs get in the way.
A good optical mouse is best though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/ceasaryes.gif

Just keep your hands above the table when playing games.

I bought one to avoid RSI, but those things are hard to learn to use properly and quickly. You can't scroll quickly as you need to move the ball only with your thumb. And somehow I thought that trackballs were getting extinct.
I use a Wacom drawing tablet, and while not exactly perfect for FPS games it works quite good with M:TW and it lets me work for hours without feeling anything in my should or wrist.

damit, you beat me to the punchline http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
i would never go back to the ball mouse again, optical all the way nowadays.
a graphics tablet (Wacom etc) isn`t too bad either, but trackballs always slowed me down.
i`ll stick with my cordless optical mouse. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Most ball mice suck (especially Microsoft's.) However, in my experience Logitech makes an excellent ball mouse mechanism. I've had no trouble with one I installed on the wife's PC several years ago (and I use it a lot, especially for web surfing.) In comparing the Logitech to the MS mice one thing I noticed was that the Logitech roller wheels (not the ball) were at least twice the diameter and of a different material than the MS mice. I have never had to clean the Logitech rollers, whereas I cleaned the MS mice every few days.
I use optical mice for my game machine and work laptop (both Logitech mice), but I don't have any issues with the Logitech ball mouse.

i hooked up and modded a nintendo-style controller and it was pretty cool.
i don't mean with mtw - that just sucked. but it was good with other games.
Pubes are not a problem.
Its eyebrows, eyelashes, arm hair & fluff dust that get in the way.
But only on a badly designed optical mouse.
