I want to play as the russians in early and i've tried editing the startpos file and that didn't work. i've read about the -ian method but i can't find out how to do it, can somebody please tell me?

What did you do to mod them? To use the -ian switch, you right-click the shortcut to M:TW, choose properties, look at the shortcut tab and in the target tab put -ian on the end. In the game, I think you press shift+1 to get to be the russians.

on the startpos file i changed novgorod to FT_MAJOR instead of minor. is this doing it right?

i got the -ian to work but i can't find the right number for novgorod.

Try shift+8. If that doesn't work, just do 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 and the same with shifts until you find it. It may not be in there, though.
