View Full Version : Hojo Hords still an issue?
I havent played shogun for a long time.
Now I started playing it again and Im really enjoying it.
I remember though that the only thing that annoyed me when i first played the game was the Hojo Hords, a cheat the developers had put into the game in the more difficult levels.
Is this still an issue or has it been fixed?
thanks
Im talking about Shogun not Medieval obviously I did not mention it cause i did not notice the entrance hall was for all the games and not only STW.~;)

Hi webwing, welcome to the .Org.
I think barocca's v50 solved most of the imbalance issues. See a discussion and links here:

I've heard of the Hojo Horde, but in all my games of STW (there's been a few http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ) I've never seen it. What exactly is it supposed to be, a massive Hojo army turning up sometime or something?

It's that Hojo quickly take control of the entire eastern part of Japan. It's the rich part of Japan and gives Hojo the abillity to churn out massive amounts of troops. Ten turns later they'll own everytring east of Kyoto and more troops are comming in.
Think 1000-3000 a year. Soon they will have broken through your defenses.
I've seen an Uesugi horde once http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif and it wasn't me.
Edit: I think they are talking about this, wasn't too active on the net when STW was relativly new.

It got fixed in MI/WE. I actually miss it, it at least made the endgame more challenging. Sometimes as many as 25,000 men.
What people questioned at the time, and I agreed, is that it was not a question of the clan being rich and having a big army. There was no way they could ever get that size of army without a cheat in the game code to make the game more chalenging. So instead of making the game more difficult giving you less money and/or less honor, etc they just gave hojo a massive army out of the blue.
It happened to me once and i felt really disapointed not for losing the campaing but because it just broke the spell since i was imersed in this world and sudenly i reallized it was a game :D

I can imagine that would make the game just a tad harder. *laughs* I have WE so I guess that's why I've never seen it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
I never ran into that problem with Hojo, but the Usegi horde of archers could be annoying. Nothing like watching your elite warriors from the other side of the island getting mowed down by archers.

I'm tempted to Reinstall STW and play it to try and find the Hojo horde...
Well for the ones interested in facing the Hojo horde just install the original STW. But no patches Play as Shimazu and you ill bet you'll see it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Good luck
Ah, and yes post the result here http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Thanks man. You have inspired me to go buy S:TW http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
the uesugi archer horde can be beaten,
attacking
a usefull army comprises 2 cav archers, 4 archers and an even mix of yari sams and no dachi (never less than 4 no dachi - never less than 4 yari sams)
split your 2 CA's off from your army and move them to one flank of the uesugi,
arrange your army so that your 4 archers are in 3 ranks per unit, and a frontage of 2 units and a depth of 2 units, the key here is volume not accuracy.
arrange 4 yari sams (4 or 5 ranks deep) behind the archer,
your no dachi the same behind the yari sams and you other 2 units one on each flank slightly behind the no dachi
march your infantry to the opposite flank from the cav arch - as they approach the uesugi the uesugi will turn to face you,
stop your infantry outside of bow range and let them rest - well outside of bow range
move your cav arch towards the uesugi until the begin firing, (3 ranks deep and side by side for cav arch)
some of the uesugi will turn to face the cav arch and some archers will start firing, as long as your cav arch are uphill from uesugi you will win this duel,
if any cav come for your cav arch - run away, you want to detatch them, when they enemy cav turn back follwo them back and start shooting at will again,
as this is happening, when cav arch get down to 50% ammo advance your army as a group , as soon as arrows start to fall on you detatch your archers and tell them to run forward s hrt distance and let them fire at will,
keep your foot advancing continually at a walk until just short of contact then run them in,
as you get realy close you may choose targets for them, but i often dont unless they break through and stop
you want to keep them together and get your flankers to run around the sides and then in behind the enemy
keep running your archers forward to provide moral bonus to troops (units behind)
as the enemy archers scatter target them with you archers directly, i usually leave one archer at fire at will,
bring your cav arch up behind and maybe use them to run down archer units.
once enemy has fled, and if you epect more enemy move army to a hill,
setup as before
but keep ca's with army this time
have to run to work - excuse spelling,
may remember more later -
but thats the basics for uesugi archer hordes.
