What is this \"retrain\" feature?

When i select my units inside a castle there is a is a bar which states the amount of koku required to "Retrain" the selected units.
What does this do and how do i use it?

If the unit has lost some men ,retraining will replace them, if the unit has a lower armour value than currently available in the castle, it'll upgrade them, same with weapon upgrades.
