View Full Version : Creative Assembly Question about M:TW

Hello, I'm a new poster who has been lurking for some time (since the end of Feb 04) in the Main Hall, taking in what wisdom I could from the posters of that forum. I've also learned a lot from the FAQ's and Guides (notably the well done ultimate unit guide), and passed the links on to my friends.

I had many questions, and all but one have been adequately answered- the search function came in handy. My single remaining question is this:

Using the -ian command line thing, is it possible, in M:TW, to switch to the Swiss faction (assuming, of course, that they've emerged)? I've been able to do so for every other faction, including the Burgundians... the Swiss are the only ones who elude me.

If it makes a difference, I have VI and the latest VI patch installed.

Thanks for any help that can be provided,
DB

Katank is a walking talking (well posting) MTW library

after starting the game with -ian, you can use ctrl+ to switch to a particular faction.
e.g. ctrl+1, ctrl+2, etc.
Use shift in addition to go over 10 (i.e., 11, 12, etc).

whats -ian ?

You don't seem to understand.

I know how to use -ian. I have no problem with that. As I said in my initial post, I have done it, even figuring out how to switch to the Burgundians after they emerged.

But I can't find whatever key I need to hit to switch to the Swiss. That's what I'm looking for. I can't just jam the keyboard, because some keys do bad things, like the autorun thing.

Thanks for trying though, as well as the welcomes. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Cheers

If you put -ian at the end of the command line, it'll run the game Debug Mode.

It lets you do some things, like hitting G removes fog of war from the Strategic map, and hitting 1-0, or shift+1-0 will switch your faction. For example, hit 8 and you're suddenly the Germans. Then hit 7 and you're France. Shift 2 and you're Spain. And so on.

But I can't figure out what I need to hit to switch to the Swiss, and I'm apparently in the minority in that I don't like MedMod, which lets you play as the Swiss.

cool....... just think of the possibilities...
i think that some1 that know all of those commands should write them so people who never heard about it (like me) could try this (or is there such a file and i just don't know how to look)

Just look for cheats for the game. It's usually listed there alongside actual cheat codes.

Or mod the game in late to make the swiss accessible.

Bump

Somebody's gotta have a definitive to this. Besides modding it, which I'd rather not do.

Better still you can set it up so the game plays itself... nifty screen saver :D

Setup a shortcut to MTW like this:

in the shortcut properties target put this in (assuming your setup is default):

C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War\Medieval_TW.exe -ian

Yeah, I already found that. I'm hoping to avoid doing it again. That's why I'm asking here.

Again, let me reiterate... I already know how to use -ian. I've been using it for well over a month. I usually use it to make it so that comp actually plays intelligent (like if it builds a huge army, I actually get them to use it instead of simply standing on my border doing nothing), or to stop the comp from cheating (like when it makes Crusades bebop all around my empire instead of going after their target- which I am unable to do).

I just want to know how to switch to the Swiss.

There's got to be a key to press, just like all the other factions... I just can't find it. And i don't feel like trying to get the auto-run to stop again. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-computer.gif

I don't want to mod it, and I don't like MedMod... so those aren't options.

Somebody must know the answer... or is there no button, and the Swiss are simply inaccessable, outside modding or MP?

Cheers

Sorry, can only choose faction 1 to 20. Swiss is the 21st.

Another side effect of the -ian command line is that you get an unrestricted camera view in battle...

Still it comes in handy for getting some fantastic screenshots of Battle replays.

Can you change the faction number?

Let me re-phrase that... can the non-developers mod it.

Sure, just rearrange the order the factions appear in the DeclearFaction bit in startpos. Conquest mode should work fine. The homelands in glory mode will need to be rearranged, not an easy task as regowner_table is a bit of a mess.

The file you want for homeland is regowner_table in the root. I am sorry it's a bit of a mess. All it needs is a sequence of FN_FACTION,points.

There are 16 period in the game from early to the end. The year where the points are counted cannot be changed, so you are basically stuck with just editing our stuff.

The first 16 is for region zero, don't change that. The next 16 pairs is for region one. If shows who should own this region at which check point and how many points that region is worth. In the game region one is Scotland, and the table shows that in the 9th check point if FN_ENGLISH holds Scotland then they gain 1 point.

Again, it's not pretty but if you needs to change the goals then this is the only way.

the topic, which has more detail, is here
How to change the GA points for homelands (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST&f=26&t=14828)

Thank you. It's not what I wanted to hear, but at least it's an authoritative-sounding (or rather... reading? written? I dunno) answer.

Yeah it's kinda neat. But you can get some interesting angles out of it, like zooming way out and looking straight down on the battle.

Cheers everyone

a formatted version of the regowner table is here,

organised by provinces to make modding the table easier,

this table WILL work just fine in Medieval.

regowner_table formatted by Viking Horde (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/regowner_table_formatted_VikingHorde.zip)

many many thanks to Viking Horde
