i have a zero computer http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif , but the game still runs ok at the tactical map but at the fighting arena thing it is godly slow, it take him ages to move http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif is there anyway of making it runs faster but closing all programs, and lowering resolution ?(tried did'nt helped a lot)

Turning sound and fauna and smoke off should help. Also lowering unit sizes.

amir
06-22-2004, 19:59
i tried those be4 2, the smaller units sizes r helping a bit but its destroys balance as some units stay at the same size(although their price is higher its ain't fun they become double deadlier because now they ain't so numerically inferior)

Although it probably won't help much, a disk defrag might be worth a try. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif

I've once heard that there are programs that make the computer work faster, but i haven't found anything like that, if any1 do know about such a program it will be great help
10x in advance

do a search for 'intel accelerator' - intel has some program that's supposed speed up your CPU a bit. Can't say it was very noticeable on my machine, but it might have an impact for you. Also, check what's running on your PC - shutdown any excess processes. Norton Anti-Virus is a resource pig, shutting it down made a big difference for me.

thnx ill make the search right away

BTW
I always close ALL my programs be4 playing any game (if i am connected to the internet i leave the firewall open).

- keep in mind startup processes run in the background and don't show up as an app. You haven't posted what OS yer using, but here's the minimum list for XP (from Symantec):
- System Idle Process
- System
- CSRSS.EXE
- EXPLORER.EXE
- LSASS.EXE
- SERVICES.EXE
- SMSS.EXE
- SVCHOST.EXE (shows up twice)
- WINLOGON.EXE

anything else is overhead and eating up CPU cycles.

also, if you have XP, do a search for 'msconfig.exe' and run it. it let's you edit startup programs. A lot of free apps (RealPlayer, any IM) always sneak in startup apps. Makes their apps start faster, but at the cost of having their background processes consuming some resources all the time.

What are your system specs? Obviously if you don't have Intel hardware than an intel app won't do much.

HicRic
06-23-2004, 17:12
Do you know what your system specifications are (like processor speed, RAM, graphics card and memory, and so on)?
If they were high then we could establish there was a problem somewhere, but if it's down in the 200Mhz region or something then you're probably not going to manage it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

a poor 733 MHz proccesor 256 MB RAM and a lousy grtaphic card

but never mind i just check somthing that actualy work: i run msconfig and disabled from there everything, a bit of trouble because that means i have to restart to play but...it worth it

733 MHz is nothing those things aren't even being selled anymore, the average computer is at least a P4 not a lousy P3, beside i have a horrible graphic card and because its a laptop i cant switch it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif so in general i have a lousy comp

and where u serious about the 75MHz thing?

melvinio
06-23-2004, 19:03
yeah it worked back then.
unfortunately, my family bought our first computer just before the big boom, so within 3 months it was nothing, but it was OK: it had Windows, not MS DOS http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif
anyheu, what were we talking about?
oh yeah...

Yeah, I never did upgrade my 486 to 8MB of memory.

The more often you defrag the less time it takes each time. The windows 98 defragger can have some really long defrag times though.

If there is anything that improves the speed of your PC without any side effects then it's turned on by default. You're not going to improve the speed of the PC much then what it is after a windows reinstall (including proper drivers and defrag of course).

If your graphics card uses anti-aliasing or isotropic filtering, turn them both off. they kill performance.

Oh my God.

Go here, m8:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/dkeeperlite.html

and download Diskeeper Lite. It's free. Run it once a week (after doing a standard ScanDisc; not thorough, but check automatically fix errors).

First time might take a bit of time - but no deFragger should take more than 30 minutes. Ever.

If W98 deFragger took 16 hours to deFrag, it had to have been the first time it was ever run. You had file fragments scattered all over your Hard Drive, making your 733 processor extremely tired just looking up where it had hidden bits and bytes of files.

With a 733, 256 RAM & self-reported crap vid card, you can still run MTW (it's near the specs of my machine: 1G, 256, 8MB integrated vid), just not the 10,000 troops on the field type of battles.

And believe me: I feel your pain, re: upgrades.

nizar

I remember that I like Shogun TW so much that when M:TW was released I got it immediately. To my horror it failed to go pass the menu screen. I waited almost six months before I was able to upgrade my computer.

If R:TW does not run on my comp it will be a nightmare. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

yeah i just tried to have a fight of one 100 peasants vs 100 peasants and not only i won it actually worked properly i guess its just because my comp cant handle too many objects,

I've also tried too fight 200 my peasants vs one enemy 200 peasants and against 100 peasants and two enemies and the two enemies fight were slower, so for all the slow comp guys:(like me)don't fight the bigfights(just let the comp lose http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif )

That's odd...I'm running MTW on a 450 mhz computer (no joke http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ) and it can cope with 1000 vs 1000 pretty decently (not great...but decently) but I do have a 16mb graphics card. Maybe that's the key.

For a mere $3,000 (gulp) you can pick up one of these babies:
http://www.alienware.com/Product_Pages/notebook_gaming.aspx

featuring an upgrade-able graphics card and processor. I read that HP is going to start offering similar notebooks later this year. So there is hope, but down the road, and a bit pricey.

amir
06-24-2004, 22:12
oh mama, those thing are not expansive at all i got 8 of those at my backyard, i'm really thinking about improvment but not on that price.
with one thing i agree with you: those are babies

Its a shame your having problems. I only use my laptop for internet use (or will do when i get a phone line at home) and playing my older games like Red alert (the origanal), theme hospital and civ II.

I thought i was the only one who had a P75. Still have mine and think it still works. I was so happy when my i managed to upgrade it from 8mb Ram to 32mb and got a new graphics card.
