Have they released the amount of armies that can be on a field? Cuz that's only 4 armies in that pic. Imagine having 8 full armies battle. *drool* http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif

Does it bother anyone else that it looks like there are about 200 horses in a single unit? Although the flag barer of the second unit could be off screen...

Amazing regardless.

THese images are much more interesting than the close up ones, and frankly are i think where the game looks better. No shrieking about dayglo colours here. bearing in mind this is about as close as you're going to want to be zoomed in to play the battles and have much hope of winning it does look really good.

The closeups are fine, but what's the polygon count? the same as halflife? Stunning considering the numbers involved, but visually it's not going to blow you away when you're zoomed in so close you could climb up their nostrils.

Looks okay for something they've been paid full time for and spent three years making. Whats up with the giant banners? Those polygons are going to be slow as molasses, why didn't they stick with sprites? Well despite that its a beautiful game, and I'm rushing out to buy it as soon as it comes out, may even plan my vacation around it, just don't think three weeks will be enough... who needs work when Rome needs a Caesar? Just can't wait to mod it. Yes I'm nitpicking because I'm tired of waiting, only so much life, yet SO MUCH MORE Rome:Total War

That battle has at least 6 armies.

There was mention in one of the interviews or something of 48000 in an 8 player battle.

Polygons are faster & better than sprites.

surely that depends on how many polygons per man, from what I've seen theres quite a few.

It also depends on the resolution & number of angles of the sprite.
But you can angle polygons in any direction & they still keep the right perspective wheras sprites look awful if you get outside the intended range, or they get huge file sizes if you make an extended variation of angles.
Also, modern graphics cards are primarily about polygons, so they draw polygons very well, while sprites are kind of on the back burner performance wise.

I'm trying to figure out exactly who are fighting who.

At first glance it seems they are all allied and fighting the city, but when you look closer, it seems some of the "allies" are fighting each other...

it looks like a pic from one of the trailers.

where the barbarians attack a Roman city. Then a roman army comes in to hit the barbarians from the back. And then the Carthaginians come in to hit the Roman army the back.

siege battles are going to be great.

they have made the unit size adjustable in past games, probably will here too. I'm sure they offer additional options to help slower machines deal.

I'm going to start pricing new ram. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-juggle.gif

Lets just hope the enemy ai actually attack your castles this time round, rather than just seige you http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Still looks brilliant though. Cant wait much longer http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif

Lets hope people actually use the sieges rather than autocalcing because they get fewer losses (because CA forgot to add the effects of the castle to autocalc http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif )

It is a game, games are about fun. Fight the battle, more losses or not.

There probably will be some stand off and siege, because as I understand it you use that time to build your engines.

If that is the case, you go into a siege with the intention of attacking. So, there should be more such fights. Of course if it makes more sense to wait that is what will happen.

If not, we can probably set up siege battles in quick fight mode.

Yup, I always assault straight away (unless I forget) 'cos the assaults are fun http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif
There's even quite a few cases where you can come out of the assault with fewer casualties than an autocalc http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-party2.gif
