View Full Version : What Will You Mod

Instead of upbraiding CA for this or that annoyance (what is the point anyway?), we will mod to our hearts content.
So, this is a thread about the little things that I will (attempt) to mod in order to give myself increased enjoyment. I am not talking about wholesale mods of, say, the Egyptians or the Barbarians, just some odd items. Items like;
1. Eliminate the flags = don't want, 'em, don't need 'em - the unit iconography below the battle screen tells me all I need to know about my forces, and knowing all about the enemy would give me an unfair advantage.
2. "No Flame" mod - the flaming arrows should be included as an option, right? If so, I hope the option is for battlefields and not sieges. I will rid myself of flaming arrows altogether if that is what I must do. Now to the catapults - what the hell are those GREAT BALLS OF FIRE anyway? They must go.
3. No Women, No Pigs, No Dogs (sounds like a sign outside a Jackson Mississippi Men’s Club, doesn't it?) - yea, I will attempt to get rid of all of these units because they are not in the least historical. I'll reserve judgment on the subject of Gladiators, suffice it to say that if they start turning up with regularity they will go too.
4. Elephant Limit = I will try to limit the # of elephants in each unit as way to limit their effectiveness since, historically, they were decisive like ONCE (which is one more than the flaming pigs, BTW).
That's about it at first glance - anyone have any others?

Anything and everything I can't wait http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
The first thing I will mod will probably be the AI build priorities for the various units and buildings. Adjusting these values drastically improved the gameplay in Medieval.

Now, I would like to hear more about that when you do it in R:TW.

About the flaming arrows. I think a dev said that it was an option for each individual archer unit during the battle, like changing a units formation. I may have mis-remembered it though.
As for modding, I'll wait to see what changes are needed to better balance the game after I have played it.

Sure thing. But hopefully we won't have to do anything to RTW's build priorities... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Anyway the result of such tweaks usually has the AI not building hordes of useless units, especially Peasants, Javelinmen (of all persuasions) and Archers/XBows/Arbs. It's refreshing to see an AI faction, regardless of size or its level of economic prosperity, with reasonably well balanced armies at its disposal instead of armies riddled with weaklings, skirmishers and nary a heavy cavalry unit in sight.

Geez, I completely forgot about that Yes, absolutely. It's officially at the top of my list. There is no way I'm going to sit through an entire Roman campaign before playing as Macedonia. And the opportunity to control minor factions like the Greek City States, Pontus and Scythia is too good to pass up
Change the royal bodyguard units. Nothing like an Elephant King.
make the elephants really expensive to maintain
mod the flaming dead (you can see this in some of the videos. People that get hit with a flaming arrow are instantaneously set on fire for about 2 seconds before they die)
remove the end_game limit
The first things I'll be doing is removing the end_game limit and making all factions playable. I'll still play Romans first though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
And honestly I have no problems with either flaming arrows or pigs. I think they will be fun units and everybody will have a ball using them. Also just think of the modding possibilities the pigs bring in.
