I went almost 4 months of playing without ever having a civil war, now I can't stop having them, like in the last 4 games I've had I've lost to civil wars... I can't stop having them. What should I do with those Heirs that are disloyal, and why are they so disloyal, my kinds Influence is like 6, and I've killed other factions and I end up with
** Loyal
* Piety
Dread

Have u alot of disloyal generals in one spot or one powerful one with a big army? That would cause one.

Hmm, Okay take this for example
I have a Loyal 7 Gen, in his army he has 5-6 unit leaders that are disloyal all in the same army, will that cause a civil war? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shogunshame.gif

Are you playing the same faction as before?
Is it the purple stormtroopers (Byzantine)? They tend to have a few civil wars.
Causes for civil wars that I have noted... low influence king with low loyalty generals
A recent loss.
Doing well in the game.
All three of those together and you tend to get a civil war... that is based on play, I'm sure someone can give you the numbers.
Oh and you have to have provinces that are on the verge of revolt.
I played a game once where the spanish were controlling 3/4 of the map. When suddenly rebellions pop up everywhere in their empire. The spanish king was killed ,had no heirs and all their territories became rebels.
That puts me in the lead for glorious achievement. And the spanish got zero. But a few turns later a lost heir reemerges but it was already to late for them to catch up with me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

I've heard that if your king is isolated in a province that doesn't have access to some of your other provinces it can cause a civil war. For example, you take Malta with your King and it doesn't have a port. You King is isolated for at least four years, and civ wars can pop up. I've only ever had one or two civ wars pop up on me, so I'm not 100% sure about the isolation theory.

Your ruler's influence is probably the biggest factor for general's loyalty. High influence == high loyalty generals.
Causes:
- low influence = losing provinces, failed jihads/crusades
- low loyalty generals being stack leaders. If a stack is led by a general with 5 loyalty, it doesn't matter if the rest of the units have 0 loyalty - that stack is loyal. Conversely, a stack led by a 0 loyalty general, but every unit within is 9 loyalty, is a disloyal stack and will join a civil war.
- disconnected ruler. worst case: your ruler gets stuck on an island with no port - expect civil wars AND rebellions. Sending your ruler deep into the interior is bad too - the more turns it would take to move him to a prov, the weaker his influence on both the population (province loyalty) and his generals in that prov.
Solutions:
- isolate high command, low loyalty generals - take them out of stacks and stand alone. Without an army they aren't a threat.
- re-shuffle stacks. put low loyalty general with some command into stacks led by higher command/loyalty generals.
- when a stack has no unit with command/title, the game tends to prefer cav units as stack leaders, followed by higher class infantry. [e.g. you have a stack of 4 saracens, 4 AHC and 3 peasants. no unit has any command/title. your current stack leader is a loyalty-2 AHC. You check and find another AHC is loyalty-6. pull him out and drop him back into that stack - he's now the stack leader]
- spies are your friend. Have a spy in every prov you hold. they'll give you an advance warning of a civil war and often they'll tell you who the ringleader is. isolate the ringleader or move him into the same prov as your ruler
- keep your ruler in a centralized coastal prov with port. keep him connected to your empire via ships and ports on the other end. The fewer turns it would take him to reach a prov, the stronger his influence on the people and units there.
note: province loyalty has no effect on civil wars, but is often a symptom of some problem (low influence, disconnected ruler). Low loyalty of your stack leaders leads to civil war. Low province loyalty leads to rebellions (peasant/religious uprisings, bandits, re-emergences).

Yes the use of agents, both spies and priests, bishops in your provinces and the lack of inquistors in your own lands are both factors.
The king's position is very important, and should be as central as possible. Of course, the king's influence itself is a factor as well.
beware of the Germans and Italians they tend to have a lot of civil war and disloyal generals

I've been playing the spanish, I secured spain and just started launching crusades (A couple peity 6 goveners, with +40 Zeal when govening, which leads to 100% zeal) against the elmos, I had just wiped out the elmos with 5-6 crusades... Ugh, I'll try useing more spies...

oh... now its a lot less http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/jawdrop.gif but i dont understand why 10, IMO a 3 will work fine (i believe) and the rest of years you could use to create larger armies
