Play on a harder dificulty. Make sure you have kings with low influence and strong generals. Also i think some factions are more civil war oriented than others. England usually works for me.

Lose a battle.

Get into a war and lose a highly developed province, one of your homelands but make sure you fight for it (just Withdraw your forces after a bit of fighting). Most of the time that's all it takes for the rebellious generals to come out of the shadows and promise the people they could protect the empire better than you can. I've also noticed if you lose a large number of homeland provinces, say three or four in a short time, then one of your heirs will decide that Father is no longer suited for the crown.

Take a large % of the map

I usually suffer 1 civil war every other game i play, and most of the time it is because of newly recruited solders from the far reaches of the empire that lead the calling. Those men whose father's i slew in battle and whose lands were pillaged under my ruthless watch will rise up in civil war, most often convincing a rather rebellious prince to join them in their seemingly "noble" quest.

Those are the only ways i can think of off the top of my head, good luck in...*ehem* destroying your empire http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Build many crusades/jihads and don't activate them, have an "accident" and lose that/those ribats/chapter houses. If you do it to well, the rebels will get almost all the troops, good if you want to change king.

Frame your high rank generals for treason with a zero-star spy. They will usually fail wich causes low loyalty V&V to appear. Assassination doesn't work AFAIK. Get low loyalty generals in command.

Lose provinces and avoid any loyalty boosting thing like marrying of your princesses or some V&V.

Aim for a maximum of two in loyalty, preferbly zero.

To kick off a civil war you also need an influential leader for the rebel faction. Pick a general who's got a few command stars and send an emissary to strip him of all his titles so his loyalty is preferably zero then give him a large army to lead. With a bit of luck(?), if the rest of your generals are relatively low in loyalty you should be rewarded(??) with a civil war :D

Ooh Also, try to get your king into a province where he's cut off from the rest of your lands. You can usually do this by attacking a coastal provice along your trade route and making sure that you destroy the port so your kind has no way of retreating. That has a quite profound effect on the loyalty of all your generals.

Best of, erm, luck I guess http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif

Failed crusades/jihads is one of the biggest causes of civil war and is very effective at it

Here's my tip, Send you king off to an island (like Ireland http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ) and destroy the port to trap him there. Loyalty is location effective and your king being cut off will soon cause a big drop in loyalty.

If that isn't enough grab a Crusade marker and send it off across the map... After that you might want to consider destroying the chapter house it came from and watch as the massive drop in influence causes loyalty to plummet

Civil war should follow. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You only need to have the crusader marker, not to crusade with them.

And yes I've engineered civil wars were 95+% of the troops was joining the rebels, 10 destroyed crusades on one turn does the trick http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif .
And there's no need to cut the king off, using this strategy.

I find that continually stripping titles from the high command generals works really well. I kept giving a high command high acumen royal governorship and a title and then stripping it the next turn over and over. I never thought about using a low level spy though. I'll try that next time. But my strategy worked and he rebelled. Didn't take as many other commanders with him as I would have liked, so I lost a few "rebel" provinces. But some of my other commanders ended up with more stars as a result of having to regain all the lost land.

I think we are forgetting the most obvious course. install a low loyalty general as a powerful governor then marry him to your daughter. When the king conveniently dies with heirs from old age(this is key) you should have a war between noble blooded generals.

No heir, no easy succession. (weakling heirs can promote civil war)

Otherwise the fastest and easiest way is multiple failed crusades.

Send a crusade to somplace that you know will fail and keep using it to attack until is is destroyed, your kings influence will drop to nothing and if you have a good general in command, he will rise up and gie you a good slap. This happened to me as Italy shortly after I STARTED PLAYING

Just choose the germans and you will easily have a civil war

You don't even need to send a crusade anywhere... Just demolish the chapter house and watch that crusade fail http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

add some spark to a boring campaign maybe? besides civil wars can be fun if you are not at war with any major world power, they can provide your troops a place to sharpen their swords and a place for your heirs to get some experiance. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

But you can instead - open a war
1)you won't be bored
2)generals get practice
3)no civil war

Civil wars are great fun, do it right and a few dead factions will rise up in the middle of your kingdom. The only thing better is the constant return of the pope.

GAH

Youz do not need to send crusade to fail.

EASIEST way...

Vanya sez... build many crusade icons. Don't bother launching them, as Pope might charge you money.

Then, destroy the chapter house you used to build them. They all disappear, and your king gets fragged.

And, the MORE crusades you "disband" this way, the more lopsided the rebellion will be against you.

try HRE medmod, expert

get your king isolated.

you'll likely have a civil war like it or not.

Crusade marker destruction are awesome for civil war generation.

I do it the same turn as breaking a naval link so a pathetic king gets stuck on a little island.

I think just about every province went rebel and then I reclaimed my empire Three factions reemerged and it was not cool. It's a nice way to give your self a challenge.

besides mongols and papacy resurrections, this is the best way to give yourself some battles.

also, if you get roughly an even split, it could be fun fighting high valor troops with high command gens that you trained up and hardcore infrastructure both military and economic that the AI coudl never have came up with themselves.
