View Full Version : Small Complaint about MTW

Hi everyone http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I got MTW last year and after seeing the review quickly upgraded to VI.

Now to begin with I was happy playing the campaign on my own but after interaction with other members on the forum I was encouraged to try a PBEM. After initial setup problems I started a PBEM with just 1 other member which has been great. I take more time over my reign as I don't want to let the other member down and I can't wait to see the position we are in when it is my reign again. What this meant was that my SP games had to be reduced to accomodate the PBEM. Okay so far http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

Well my fellow PBEM member then thought it would be a good idea for us to try an MP game as we were both new to it. This we have done with just the 2 of us and again it has been an exhilirating experience. We have had 6 games so far over 2 nights and varied the games as much as possible. What this means now is that my PBEM game has suffered in order to accomodate my MP game.

My complaint: Where will it end? I barely had enough time for SP and now thanks to PBEM and MP I am even more addicted. Can I get help? Should I pack my job in? I want to solely devote my time to MTW: VI http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Okay just kidding everyone. I am loving every minute of my MTW: VI experience. If there are other SP only members out there come on try PBEM and MP, you don't know what you're missing And I would recommend trying them with another newer member just to get the hang of things and not be totally outclassed

I'd like to thank Tricky Lady for introducing me to the other side of MTW: VI http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Also thanks to Froggy for the guides for both SP and MP which have been invaluable. The 2 aspects are very different in tactics and army selection http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Finally thanks to everyone else on here for all the constant tips and strategies http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Thanks YAKOBU.

By the way, shouldn't you be playing MTW instead of waisting valuable time at the Org? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif

We should consider ourselves lucky to have issues such as these as the problems in our lives. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif

I remember during school I would actually plan my SP conquests during class. People would look at me funny when started using geographical references from the game such as, referring to the Middle East as The Levant.

We had a Turkish exchange student, and there were many times when I would refer to Instanbul as Constantinople. Akward times http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I had a student that moved from turky and attended several of my classes, she was a slight history buff when it came to turky and was very proud of her nation...

I always refered to Istanbul as Constantinople..... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

It irritated her to no end... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

I notice you are specifically thanking the ladeez... you smoothy you. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

Agree with you... there are not enough hours in the day for me to work (gotta earn the cash to pay for the broadband to keep up with the Org), eat, sleep, interact with the family and play MTW. One of these has gotta give, and if my numbers come up on the lottery it is definitely gonna be work.

I have the same problem with about five games, including MTW VI, GTA3, Mafia, KotOR, and PotC.

I think it's all about a balance ceasar010 - i do lots of other stuff and I am in school but i figured it would be fun to interact with people who dabble in the same game I play - especially if the have the same interest in Medieval History as I have.

But I get your point - if it were to take over my life I guess I'd be a bit worried too.

I guess the best thing about this game is that I can really relate to it - since I have an interest in that kind of stuff anyway. I don't there has ever been any game that I have related to so much - then again I aint no gaming freak.

...

About MTW I have a few suggestions:

I think the trading should be more intuitive - you should still be able to trade with a province once you own it and trade should be directly related to the number of ships connecting the route. I mentioned this in some post. I have to figure out how to link it here.

I think you should be able to get some money from other buildings too - not a lot but a fractional bit.

I also think the battles should be a bit more location specific - not just random maps taking into account the border. Of course this is not a huge complaint and I think they deal with this in RTW.

A major suggestion I have is that you should be able to see a small timeline of your empire - growing or building.

Something like a video you can play at any point which shows the progress(or regress of your empire) - it would look something like this.

Medieval music plays - either the title track or something else:

The map is in the background just like it is in the game escept it takes over the entire screen instead of the top left corner. The bottom right corner has a potrait of your ruler - the same as he had in the game with his name underneath. In the top left corner the various years in med font show up starting at 1087 and running till the date you play this - as the music plays and the video progresses the years change fading from one to another - on the map your colour takes over other provinces and actually shows your empire growing or shrinking - meanwhile the kings face keeps changing with his name underneath changing as well - of course all changes are fadeins and fadeouts. perhaps in random parts of the screen - like random corners other high ranking generals portraits could fade in and out as well depending on crucial wins and or crucial losses. Maybe even great building you built like a fortress, cathedral or some such. A bit like the documentaries on BBC or discovery/history channel. No commentary is needed of course just the run of your borders expanding and shrinking. So you can actually see the progress of your empire - pretty cool huh ? For me that would be the clincher.

Cheers

here's a suggestion

i want the game to be more violent. i want to see decapitation. i want to see the gory detail of peasants trampled under the hooves of my steed. Right now my MTW is suffering from the invisible corpse syndrome. How's that realistic? How am I going to be able to motivate myself to keep playing this game when I cant even see their &#%# corpses.

This is straying a bit off the original topic, but still related.

I agree that the worst thing about MTW is it is TIME CONSUMING and can seriously affect real-life activities. So in that vein, I want hints or tips on how to maximize the fun/time ratio in MTW.

I find myself spending too much time in the campaign map checking and rechecking things and still manage to forget stuff I wanted to do. For example, I sometimes forget to move a crusade marker http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif or forget to refill the queue on that teched up province making knights or move ships/agents/assassins/etc..

So I am trying to develop a system to quickly run through the to-do list efficiently and then devote time to battles, maneuvring etc.. To do list includes things like making sure construction queues are filled, agents assigned missions, crusade marker moved, titles assigned, important units repleted/retrained, ship line moved forward if possible, loyalty checked on all provinces...

One trick I learned is to go through provinces geographically (instead of alphabetically on the construction windows) and to click on the FORT in the province and not the province itslef. This shows in the bottom corner the building being built, the unit being trained and any newly built units in the fort, all in one click http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif .

I'd be interested in your thoughts/tips on how to go through the chores efficiently .
cheers,
