When does the defensive bonus kick in?

HC have a very high defensive bonus.

Is this bonus omnipresent (i.e. does it apply to every attack made against HC)?

Or is it dependent on whether the HC is attacking or just standing there defending?

????

Defensive bonus is applied to the final combat bonus when two units engage, just like the melee bonus. Yuuki can explain much better http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

However a high defense value means a unit will KILL slowly but DIE slowly.

((Attack Bonus of Attacker) - (Defense Bonus of Defender)) times sqaured blah blah blah = % Chance of kill.

Basically when two little sprites meet in combat, one will hit the other. He has a percentage chance of achieving a kill based on the difference between his melee bonus (with a charge bonus added if he is charging) and the defense bonus of the guy he is hitting.

It's as simple as that.

Defense bonus has no effect whatsoever on how quickly a unit kills.

Yuuki I'm sure will be able to spit out the exact formula.

Khan7's explanation is right, but there are also combat situation bonuses added into that result like height advantage, fatigue penalty, yari bonus vs cav, etc. In the troopstats file, the attack bonus is refered to as melee bonus. Just remember that in the formula attacker refers to the man who is striking a blow and defender is the man receiving the blow. This alternates back and forth regardless of which unit actually charged into which. They could both have charged into each other. To get a unit's charge bonus added to the melee value, the unit has to actually charge into the enemy unit with single or double mouse click on the enemy unit. Running into a unit other than the targetted unit looses the charge bonus. A final value of 0 represents about a 19% chance to kill and every +4 points doubles the chance and every -4 points halves the chance of a kill. I don't really understand the kensai because it has a very high melee value, but it does not kill on every blow it strikes. There may me a cut-off value on the chance to kill.

Ok, thanks guys-- So it is an omnipresent bonus that applies everytime an enemy tries to hit that unit.

I assume, then, that it applies even when your unit is attacked from a flank.

There are penalties for being hit in the flank, the rear, and while fleeing, etc etc.

Of course, but those are in addition to the Defensive bonus which (presumably) always applies.

If the DB always applies, then how is it any different from armor?

Armor has no effect on melee. It is used to determine projectile vulnerability.

P.S.: You may want to (a) direct these questions to the Editing/Mods forum, or (b) read Kraellin's reposting of Targets full explanation of all of this stuff, which is there. In fact, b would be the preferable choice.
