in stw and mtw the ai armies very very very rarely attacked my castles and when they did they either didnt bring siege weapons or had a real small silly army that i could kill in a second ..
the cities in rtw look like they will be fun to defend but have CA made it so now the ai actually do attack them from time to time and with a large enough force with siege weapons. if they have it would make the game so much better imo because i like defending castles cities etc. but this part of gameplay was missing in the previous two games. defending castles is something you really rarely got to do in mtw i would like to try it in rtw but im afraid the ai will be the same, does anyone know if this has been changed for rtw or any other information? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif

They made improved sieges a selling point in MTW; unfortunately, it rarely ever happened.
Hopefully, it's corrected, along with the AI. An AI overhaul is long overdue...
Actually, I found out that in the mid to late game, all I'm ever doing is storming castles. I'm hoping for better sieges in RTW but my bigger hope is more open terrain battles. In MTW, the AI retreats way too often, especially when defending.

I want to have a good defensive castle battle. In MTW you were usually sieged to death, unless you had like 2 men then you get stormed by a 500 man army that you have no chance of winning, despite your castle size.
hopefully in RTW sieging will be slower or something to encourage more assaults, and that the AI will assault you more, instead of painfully waiting everything out.
The only thing im hoping for is that battles dont take For Ever to finish when you face the AI... usually in Late I have a few thousand elite soldiers marching around being retardidly victorius. But when I finally face an army that could defeat me it usually an army of 20k soldiers, usally only spearmen and horsearchers. The Battles can go on for EVER... I Usually make the Ai attack but the ai is hoplessly dull and never tries anything new or daring.
As for the Siege is the same... the Ai send 1 unit to bang on the door, then another and another, untill the door is down and then the army charges and gets smashed inside the walls couse they didnt smash any walls so the only was they can come in is the door.
Better Sieges and AI that accualy tries to be bold sometimes and do new things http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif
When the ai actually manages to bring siege weapons to a siege instead of a field battle, they do knock down walls with them.

But then attack the gate anyway. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif
In one of the videos from e3 you can see before a seige that is possible to purchace ladders, battering rams and seige towers. I assume you would need some tech or other for the second two but ladders will make sieges possible for armies in the early stages of a campain
Edit: the purpose of that was to show that the ai will have another way to attack a castle thena break down the gate
it always happens with me.
im defending a castle nearly every time i lose a province.
thanks, dessa

A quick reminder, gentlemen; in M:TW, the AI will attack castles always when you are playing on the expert setting, no matter how strong/weak its armies are.
Regretfully, it will make some blatant bummers while doing so, and hence I sincerely hope that the R:TW siege AI is little “fatter” then the average M:TW AI.

I sincerely hope that all of the AI in R:TW will be better. In M:TW whenever they went on the offensive they would just simply have all their guys hike it up the big hill you were defending and attack, without any kind of weaking by archers or organization to the assault. It seemed like the AI was good at breaking alliances and attacking unsuspected but a relative idiot compared to a human on the battlefield.
Don't forget that in RTW city population size is key to tech levels (among other things).
I'd imagine sieges will drastically reduce the number of inhabitants (starvation, death from siege equipment, disease, etc).
And yes, I do hope the RTW AI is smart enough to disband weak units (like peasants) when better tech units become available to it. Speaking of which, I hope the RTW AI keeps a far larger yearly surplus for teching up its provinces.
In MTW, the AI will usually stop churning out units once its surplus dwindles to about 500 florins. The problem is, that's not enough to tech up an empire. Maybe one province. Definately need more parameters and the AI needs to adjust to compensate for losing (or gaining) provinces.

The thing I'm going to enjoy is killing hundreds of Barbarians, save two. Then attacking the city, and on the walls are two head hurlers Now the game is getting realistic. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/ceasaryes.gif

out of curiosity, how do you encourage population growth ?
haven't seen any brothel-like buildings (such as in good old mtw, where unfortunately they served a totally different purpose).
is it just the vicious circle of:
build more buildings which lead to a population increase which allows you to build more buildings ?
I mean, that's pretty old, dull and bland. Games have been that way for 20 years, surely some improvement can be thought of.
How about: my faction has this famous general, and I put him in this town, and people come to live in the same city because they feel more protected, and in awe of the famous hero ? Or I build who-knows-what wonder or something in another city, and again ppl come there to see it, and some of them stay for good ? Or some religious monument ?
Or my king's daughter is a beautiful maid (or patrician) and hundreds and thousands of brave youg men come to seek her favours...I don't know. I can come up with lots more or less crazy examples.
No, I don't wanna turn this into Simcity, of course, but come on, you gotta admit the strategic part of MTW can definitely use some variety...and that shouldn't take anything from the tactical aspect.
