A couple of weeks ago i posted a thread about favorite factions. And it doesn't take a genius to glance at it and see that the most preffered factions are....
drumroll please..:drummer:
the English, the Turks, the Byzantines,The Germans, the Spanish and the Italians
Now these choices must be based on the relative position on wich these factions start and that all of them have access to unique units.
The english for example have access to the legendary longbow, as well as some unique irish and scottish units. They are also in good position to dominate all of europe.
The turkish is a no brainer their huge roster of unique units is enough to give them the popularity vote.
The Byzantines have a wonderfull roster as well as a good mix of both western and easter units. Finally the italians get italian infantry, wich i see is deeply loved here and also can make gothic units.They are also in good position to begin conquest in the eastern world.
The spanish also because of their unique cavalry (lancers and jinnetes).
The germans also got praise probably because they start with a nice complement of provinces and get into many conflicts early.

So choose one, only one.

ummm. highlanders are available to all catholics and orthodox, not just Brits and gallows and kerns to all catholics.

jinettes are available to all catholics and russians.

many of this isn't unique.

personally, me love the turks. my hell horsies and later jannies can take anything. BTW, discounted ghazis rule with silver armor from Const, they actually on't die that fast

establishment of Const., Egypt, Georgia/Khazar triangle also gives nice set of provinces with minimal land borders.

try my early blitz against the Eggy to guarantee a ransom.

Turks.Far as i'm concerned best units at affordable prices apart from the Jannissaries which are anything but affordable.Like units like the Turcoman infantry and ottoman sipahi who can create a rain of arrows and then close to finish the job with cold steel.Need them with all the upgrades and a good General however.

You're right but they have acces to those units right at the beginning and in their best defended provinces.
So they aren't exactly unique but still unique enough.

I like the Spaniards a lot. Turks must come a close second, although I kinda lack practice playing with them (haven't played a full campaign with them yet).
Why Spain ?
- nice units: lancers (unique to them & aragonese), jinettes (not quite unique, but Imuyasha has a point).
- nice strategic position: perhaps not as good as England, although that is debatable: England is better defended, but that means it has less room to expand too. From Spain you can go either of two ways and still defend your homelands pretty easily.
- really nice lands: rich in farming, really good in trade (all of them make above average money from trade, albeit not as much as flanders, but this is ALL of them - except navarre, of course); plus, you have half of the iron provinces on the map right there, which means that practically all your units will have weapon upgrades...
- Grand Inquisitors *grins devilishly*
- caravels; what's the main kind of ship in your navy ? cogs & carracks ? i don't think so. they come way too late, are way too expensive and take way too long to build. I believe in caravels, myself ;) (talking about bonus for building them in Portugal, ofc).

Perfect naval empire position, despite the lack of deepwater ships. build up venice and genoa, naples and sicily aren't far away.

they get gothic troops which give you a huge bonus over byzantines which are crap in late

clansmen I would grant the Brits would get them fairly early.

However, as French or Brits, I always rush the other and am usually occupied with expanding out into Iberia or blitzing the HRE to take Scotland as that is pretty much mine and I woudl otherwise lose momentum if I turned around. Thus, I get them as French like the same time.

As for jinettes, Aragonese which displace Spanish when I play as well as Brits and French also have a good shot at jinettes.

I don't think valor for ships actually do anything.

as for defense, if you got offensive armies stationed there, no way anyone would be able to crack the defense.

Spanish do have nice position.

morocco all the way across north africa is 1 border. combination of Castille/Valencia, Navarre/Aragon, Aquitaine/Aragon, Aquitaine/Toulouse are all valid 2 province borders north.

sacking into the middle east triangle would yield holy land for crazy GA value and if securing Khazar/Georgia and Const, that would be only 4 borders with most of the killer trade provinces in the game as well as awesome farming with iron.

the infamous north africa crusade run is also amazingly effective.
