making the pope playable

title pretty much tells all. ive changed the pope from FN_MINOR to FN_MAJOR, but does it actually work in game? (i.e. anybody who invades automatically becomes excommed)

Sort of. You can't control the pope, but (usually) people get auto-excom. for attacking you.

Yup, it works. It´s pretty scary that you can play the Pope, attack someone and when they attack you back they get x-commed, he he If you try Vikinghordes XL-mod you can even play it GA-style.
