View Full Version : perversion vice
I'm only on my third MTW campaign. I've played two VI campaigns - Northumbrians and Welsh - and one regular MTW campaign as the HRE. So maybe it's coincidence, but the perversion vice seems to appear far more frequently in the VI era than the regular campaign. My HRE campaign had one perverted Emperor who still managed to produce an heir but that was it for that vice (at least within the royal family). My VI campaigns have had several princes with the vice. (Maybe brothers take after each other ... eesh)
Has this happened to anyone else, or is it coincidence? If it's not coincidence, I wonder if there's a historical reason for it. I recently read a book, "The Last Knight" by Norman Cantor, in which the author said medieval Europe was relatively tolerant of homosexuality until the high or late era (as the Church grew stronger, and as monarchs came depend more on popular support). He cited the examples of early kings whose tendencies were ignored and later ones, like Richard II of England, who ran into trouble for it. So maybe there is a historical basis for it. "Not that there's anything wrong with that ..." to quote Seinfeld
I think I've noticed this trend as well. A surprising amount of my brutish Viking warriors are perverts, at some point I thought about 50% of my decent generals and royalty were turd burglars or arse bandits so to speak. The longer these guys hang around, the more prone they seem to become of "catching the gay."
Of course, the majority of unit leaders have no vices or virtues at all, but when the score of prominent ones start aquiring them one of the definitely most usual vice one has been perversion. Its quite harmless though so I don't mind. I just don't remember half that many from my previous MTW campaigns.
I have no knowledge of any historical facts that would support this either way. AFAIK the percentage of the population that tends to "score on their own net" rather then at the opponents has been more or less constant, something aking to 10% of the populace (someone correct me if I'm totally wrong). Now a culture that does not frown on this would let them all jump out of the closet and the rest to experiment if they want to. An intolerant church would drive these people underground.
But a tolerant culture would not suddenly turn half or more of your statesmen/royalty/generals into perverts when they reach the age of 30 or something, right?
Also is their any formula by which generals get either vices or virtues? You get better command by winning fights, attack/defence specialities by doing either, but the rest are a mystery to me. Is it totally random? These guys just attract all kinds of trouble. I have one superb general in my current campaign without a SINGLE detrimental virtue/vice in regard of his command & combat ability. He has murderous temper, is charismatic, natural leader, last stand, defence and attack specialist, invulnerable etc. etc. The rest of my old school general staff have become somewhat debilitated by various vices over time :D One is an obese sybarite with very poor health and is so dead drunk all the time and has to be strapped on his horse, the other one is an unhinged loon etc... Good generals still though but their army morale and personal valour tend to take hits...

I know when you have a spy and you look to see someones secret vices, it says
"The higher command the general is, the more he has to hide"
So I think a 6-7 star general has a better chance of getting the bad vices...
Im not sure, but thats what I've noticed, I get a good general and he has some rotten vices. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
