How exactly do you raise your general's command in battle? I know you can do so by adding titles and v&v's, but I'm talking about on the battlefield.

1) Win battles:
Rank 1 Wins 1
Rank 2 Wins 2
Rank 3 Wins 4
Rank 4 Wins 8
Rank 5 Wins 16
Rank 6 Wins 32
Rank 7 Wins 64
Rank 8 Wins 128
Rank 9 Wins 256
Note that this wins are net wins, = (wins - losses)
2) Gain v/v (again through fighting)
*** attacker/defender (up to +3) when attacking or defending
*** assaulter/siege defender (up to +3) when involving siege, attack or defending
*** risky attack/last stand (up to +3) when involving attack/ defense when out numbered (quality of troops considered as well) more than 2:1
Skilled +1
Expert +2
Specialist +3
Hi there http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
I don't want to raise any controversy but there are several threads on earning command stars. Feelings seem to be mixed but my experience leads me to believe it's not just based on net wins. I have tested this myself and took a 4 star general and managed to get his 5th star before winning 16 battles. The general in question was given no title and his V&V's were taken into account. I think there may be something built in to the manner of the wins rather than just the number. I will run another test when I next start a campaign.

Alright, thanks you guys. I kinda had an idea, cuz I used a 0 star general before, but the highest i got him to was 4 stars, all by way of battles. I was wondering if there was anything special that I had to do on the battlefield. But once again, thanks, especially for the net win #'s.

@YAKOBU
Yah, at the .com we couldnt decide on that either. The list I did was correct for STW. Application to MTW may not be accurate. I have found no conclusive proof that the rank difference b/w generals would or would not affect the stars gaining rate. A lack of confirmation on the matter from the devs hamper the discovery of the mechanism.

If his base rank is 4, he would need 8 more wins to gain his next star, not 16 (if thats what I understand from your reply). Seems to me thats what happened to me.

actually, i was playing around with one general last night, trying to see if i could farm some VnV's.
These are my conclusions:
1. he had 2 stars. after 4 won battles, he won a third star.
so the formula seems to be the same as in STW, at least partially.
2. i farmed rebellions in a province each turn, just sending this guy to kill them (i.e., 1 man; he was the only left alive from his unit). After 5 or 6 battles, he still had not gained any VnV's. He got his third rank, but that's it. No virtues. Then I decided to auto calc. Whaddya know, after 2 battles he gained 6 (six) virtues (2 of which were upgrades of some of the virtues gained in the first year). He got skilled attacker, field defence specialist, last stand specialist...
He also got 3 more stars from some other virtue.

Smells reeeeally buggy (virtues wise) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif
virtues are by far the easiest to get.
use small elite armies and win (beginning of the game, it's only possible with mercs)
this way, you are almost guaranteed V&V's
having attack specialist and field defence specialist is just about the same thing as having 3 extra stars which would often require extreme and often unfeasible number of battles if he started as a 5* or 6*

Not quite. The program apparently takes into account of the troop quality as well as numbers. However, the command ratings of the generals involved do not matter. Best to gain such vices is to fight against a rankless and -ve morale laden king. Small teams of HAs would easily cause the enemy to route within seconds (or less) and ensure a very high casualty ratio.
Getting those risky attacker or last stand defender v/v are even more fun.
well, I find numbers are dominant.
BTW, I can take a single unit of druzhna=60 FFK and carve through a few hundred peasants and spears.
it's a cakewalk but the AI thinks it's impressive so skilled attacker and skiled poor odds attacker for me.
