Is it possible to obtain monk warriors to fight the Monguls in the Warlord edition. I can't seem to figure out if I can build a temple. That options never appears after obtaining the tranquil garden. Is there some kind of secret?

Warrior Monk is not available during the Mongol Invasion.
You will have to go for the custom campaigns. Among those custom campaign, I like the Japan Darkest Day (JDD) by Baroccas. You can find it here:
http://www.totalwar.org/maps/spc.shtml
It is listed as Baroccas_Campaigns (single player). In this campaign, if you play as Japan side, you can bribe Mongol troop and have an army of mix Japan/Mongol troops.
