According to GameStar they were more than happy with the game if not ecstatic. They only had one minor problem. The world view map (strategy mode). Apparently, it's still too complicated and complex, sometimes even difficult to tell things apart. Probably comes from the fact that one can zoom right in and see every minor detail...

Thanks for the link, great shots of the game.
Looking at them I share the concern the strategy map may be unwieldy because of all the detail.
I like the detail, so will have to learn to deal. maybe there is an easier way to select armies. maybe from a dropdown list. Pick the troops and zoom directly to them.

Quid the chances are these same peeps confused with the mtw map :\ these are the same peeps who said the meideval ai was difficult lol.
I suppose you're right Nonetheless, I think that this game certainly has the potential to get a good 90% rating in their magazine despite little minor things they might have to seach a long time to find.
As for the strategic map. I didn't see any problem in them selecting and navigating the map in their vid. So I am sure, it's just much ado about nothing.
It's going to be a great game and that's that

According to what is written in the article, there are two turns per year, one summer and one winter, and it may be even more vital to quickly develop your towns (which probably will be the equivalent of provinces in MTW) since construction and recruitment of troops drain populace. Thus, big cities such as Carthage and Rome should be able to raise more troops at the start of the game than factions with smaller cities, which will be something that has to be carefully balanced in order to give both AI and human players a chance for each faction. Also the economy part will be more substantial with building roads possibly allowing you to design your own trade routes and accelerate troop movement...
Let's hope some more factions will be playable in the expansion or possible moddable, but overall, the strategic part seems to be nicely done.

Now, that looks funny to me. The strategic part of the game seems - to this point - almost excellent A vast improvement over MTW and a humangous one over the Risk-style STW gameplay.
And in the same time, the tactical gameplay - the pride of the TW series - turns into a bleeding circus, with those pigz, dogz, broadz, head hurlers, armoured pooddels, Uruk-Hai and the likes GAH http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif

On the bright side, I did see in the video that you can choose separate (I assume since they were labeled separately) difficulty settings. Like you can choose medium setting for the strategy/campaign part, but expert setting for the battles within that campaign. I'm looking forward to how they will implement that, as I am not the best at the campaign, but can do the battles fairly well.
And Barocca, you can find the new video here (http://www.legiontotalwar.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4612). You have to be registered on legiontotalwar though.

This is a rough ROUGH translation...
Only three months to the Release of the most important strategy game 2004 - we played exclusively a far advanced version and tested above all the strategy mode. Soldiers The Gallier are dangerous opponents. Wildly, stink and cruelly And they are numerical superior to us. But that is only well - then so can kill we more of them Thinks that these dogs hide themselves gladly in its forests and attack out of the ambush. Yet with the Testudo-formation, we will doubt let its marksmen Our Katapulte uses With united power, we will destroy it. So lets be your slogans: Siiiiieg« we no antifranzösischen dispositions live here out of - such speeches hear you soon of your general before battle start. Währenddessen departs the camera your soldiers, who strike signs against swords and vielstimmig its Testosteron herausbrüllen. These inciting sentences describe can last the actual ratios on the field, before large combat the talk already once some
minutes. Welcome in the world of Romany.
First of all Italy unite traveled extra for GameStar Romany-maker Michael de Plater from England to Germany. Who against expecting never what belonged of the game: the cues are antique, round mode à la Civilization and 3D-Echtzeitschlachten à la... nothing. For so realistically, grandly and above all playfully rich it closes on no other game-battlefield. What interested us however in the try-out yet more: the strategy mode including world card, that is meanwhile full function efficient. At the beginning, we can the conquests Italy in a large practice campaign through the city state Rome aftermath. Directly in the 3D-Grafik, regiment or goals are marked, an adviser says, what is to be done to us. It does not give helps this adviser also in the normal game, there he to be sure with given sentences, but rather context sensitive: nominally he uses the same KI as well as the computer opponents and should give accordingly intelligent pieces of advice.
In contrast to the predecessors, a large campaign contains Romany next to single battle only. Michael de Plater that explains so: »we want to have rather an only, for that however perfectly designte start situation. For that the parties differ much more strongly from one another as in Medieval.« Italy subdivided themselves into the Roman kernel zone Latium (of senate controlled, not game cash) as well as the domination areas of the Julier, Scipionen and Brutii. These four parties represent together Rome; that is to be sure not historic, symbolizes however well the individual Machtstreben of powerful nobility families. At the beginning, all Romans are allied, it counts to win a war against Karthago and to defend the occurring Gallier. Yet sometime we could be alone strong enough to occupy Rome and to exclaim ourselves to the emperor. In this case, the senate troops with the remaining Romans ally themselves immediately, and the finale civil war begins.
Asterix ante portas respect other powerful peoples want also the predominance: Karthager, egyptian, Parther, Karthager, Britons, Greeks, Gallier, Seluziden and naturally the Teutons. All eight are independent empires that lead also against each other war. The parliamentary groups differ through zone size (powerfully: Karthago, laughably: the Greeks), controlled resources, number of families members, fortune and naturally its battle units. Michael de Plater explains: »we far less troops types construct than in Medieval on, but they have respectively more existence authorization. And each people possesses strongly influence should give at least two exclusive units, that its battle tactic.« next to typical victory conditions (strongest or richest parliamentary group) it in the finished game for each party a special goal.
Administer and lived can produce blocking how each city simultaneously a building and a battle unit. That lasts round partially several, costs money and recently also population. Through it a large city is as well as Karthago much more powerful than a little province nest, that after few years simply the able to fight men go out. Also the road construction, that enlarges our trade receipt and more mobily makes armies, is important. Each city of wise we by request a suitable KI-governor to, who administers it for us. Unlike in the predecessor we move troops, ships and strategic units (spy, Assassinen, diplomats) no longer province, but rather field manner. Through it kloppt one themselves recently around world miracle or resources fields, defends narrow place and ford. Romans erect even forts in order to protect its boundary, all peoples may construct awake towers. (LA) you read the complete article in GameStar-edition 08/2004.

I wonder how harbours/ports will act in this game,if you notice in the italy map, there are 2 ports, could they be seperate cities that can upgrade themselves(upgrade restricted to building naval, trade buildings i suppose)or are they part of the city that controls the territory?
It would be interesting if we can control the port seperatly from the city, would open more strategical options of seiging the cities that depends on them.

But Rosacrux, I agree with you about the pigs but CA do insist they were used in one battle against elephants. It does rather make you marvel at Roman ingenuity. I can't begin to imagine the relevant Roman general's thought processes that led to their deployment.
The night before:
Roman Soldier: "Man, this barbequed rib tastes good."
Roman General "Give me some. Ow, that's burning hot"
Roman Soldier "Hey, I thought your skin was as tough as elephant hide"
Roman General looks thoughtful, kinda like Joey Tribiani in "Friends".

I believe that what you are seeing are the BUILT ports for a couple of provinces. I'm pretty sure that - like M:TW - you can build ports in all sea bordered provinces. If that is the case then these ports belong to the province and would not be stand alone settlements.
Now, I wonder if you can attack just the port.

At least the strategic part of the game looks fine. Amazing, in fact. So the overall game engine (both the strategic map and the tactical engine) will be pretty good. The excellent modders will just get crackin', and a couple months after RTW is released and everyone gets good at it, some new and amzing mods will be out on the market
And as usual, the Germans have all the info. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif Why is that?

Sir Clegane,
I shall leave that to your imagination... maybe you can tell that it's a combination of Bratwurst and Schwanzstuck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Simon,
Sure they were used. Once. Does that warrant them to be a standard unit? I've heard some American Natives used buffalos against the whities... does that make "ravaging buffalos" http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif a viable unit for a realistic wargame involving Indians?
