Hi everyone http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Although numerically and strategically minded (to a lesser or greater degree http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif ) I must admit geography is not my strong point. I now play PBEM's and notice people referring to areas such as the Iberian Peninsula. I would find it very useful if I could group all the provinces in MTW: VI by geographical area.

Does anyone know of a link that groups them all or if not could someone list them for me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-help.gif

Dunno a link, but the Iberian peninsula is modern day Spain and Sortugal.

By the same token scandinavia is Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

If there are more places you have doubts about just ask.

Nope - Finland isn't a part of scandinavia. It's a nordic country, but that's another story.

Otherwise great list.

HRE is central europe.

croatia serbia etc. is the balkans.

Italian Penisula is Genoa, Milan, Venice and down.

Russia is the steppes.

friesland and Flanders is the low countries.

I like to call tripoli, palestine, antioch, edessa, and Syria the Crusader bloc as there are 4 crusader states there for GAs and holding Syria makes the overall defense so much easier.

I'd like to add that Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco are sometimes referred to as Maghreb.

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smiley.gif

PS. Finland is not Scandinavia.

The area south of asia minor and west of the sea is sometimes referred to as the Levant. All land East of Bohemia and west of the steppes could probably be called Eastern Europe (Although that's pretty slef-explanatory)

But can you name every capital city in Europe? Test on Monday. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-book2.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

From Yakobus list:

Chernigov goes to the russian steppes (Maedas list)

Marocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Cyrenacia, Egypt and Sinai to North Africa

Milan, Genoa, Venice, Tuscany, Rome, Papal states and Naples go as the Italian peninsula

Corsica, Sardinia, (Sicily), Malta, Crete, Rhodes and Cyprus are the Mediterranean islands

What's left are Poland, Silesia, Hungary, Carpathia, Moldavia and Finland. I guess you could call the first five as ummmhhh... the 'Bunch of Areas Located Between Germany, Russia and the Balkans' the BoALBGRatB http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

Finland is just... Finland

Ps. as far as I know Denmark doesn't belong to Scandinavia either http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif only Sweden and Norway.

katank

we just call the denmark, sweden, norway the kalmar union. I consider it part of scandanavia and perhaps even saxony.

Mmm, interesting, always thought Finland to be Scandinavia. Learning something new everyday. Living at the opposite end of the globe, so things look a little different from here.

it's just desert

finland is tundra

Scandinavia are the countries that are in the Scandinavian mountains, right? Denmark is across the sea and the highest peak is 170m or so. Saxony is even further away. Finland has a very slim access (about 1000 km^2 perhaps)to the scandinavian mountains with it's highest mountain called 'Halti' about 1300m but the peak is on Norways side. Generally it's concidered to be inadequate so that Finland would belong to Scandinavia.

Tundra.... hmmmmm..... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

katank

darn it, do you have to get all technical on us? as long as we know the rough area, it's good

I like to include saxony because I usually control that as a block and it requires only 1 border.

How about Central Europe? The geographic center of the European continent is near Warsaw.

Or we could call it East Europe. From West to East, that would be France, Germany, East Europe and then Russia.

Whether or not Denmark is part of what we now know as Scandinavia, it is the gateway to the rest of that continent in this game. Until fleets and ports are built, it's the only way in or out.

I would add Carpathia and Moldavia in Balkans...

Magraev
07-07-2004, 07:28
For what it's worth I'd consider Denmark a part of scandinavia because we consider ourselves to be. Didn't know it was called the scandinavian mountains either and in that respect we most certainly don't qualify.

If there was a possibility to go the northern way around from Sweden to Finland I'd say call it the nordic countries and be done with it. With the map as it is Finland is more a part of the russian steppes.

Haven't seen this used extensively, but I did have to look it up when it popped up in a thread a while back:

- The four Crusader states of Edessa, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Tripoli collectively became known as Outremer, outre-mer being the French word for overseas

Quote[/b] ]I would add Carpathia and Moldavia in Balkans... Actually The river Danube is considered to be the northern border of the Balkan peninsula, so geographically present day Romania and Moldavia don't really qualify. However politically and culturally Romania qualifies as a Balkan state. It is easy to get the two mixed up. To my knowledge Romanians do not fancy the idea of calling them a Balkan State. Neither do Slovenians. Unfortunatelly that region is not known among the Western World with a good reputation. Personally, I am proud to come from that land because it is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and it is the craddle of civilization.

here is my proposal to sort all mtw-provinces in geographic areas:

BRITISH ISLES:
Ireland
Scotland
Northumbria
Mercia Wessex Wales

i'd part france/germany into three, according to the partition of charlemagne's realm (traty of Verdun 843), which would result in a core France and Germany, and Lorrain as a contestable area between them.

FRANCE:
Ile de France
Champagne
Normandy
Brittany
Anjou
Aquitaine
Toulouse

LORRAINE:
Flanders
Friesland
Lorraine
Burgundy
Provence

HRE:
Saxony
Brandenburg
Franconia
Swabia
Bavaria
Switzerland
Tyrolia
Austria

LANDS OF THE TEUTONIC KNIGHTS ORDER:
(i know, not really a geographic expression, perhaps BALTIC STATES?)
Pomerania
Prussia
Livonia
Lithuania (or STEPPES?)

CALMAR UNION:
Denmark
Norway
Sweden
Finland (was included)

EASTERN EUROPEAN STEPPES:
Novgorod
Muscovy
Smolensk
Chernigov
Ryazan
Volga Bulgaria
Pereyaslavl
Khazar
Kiev
Crimea
Moldavia (?) i`d say yes

MAGHREB:
Morocco
Algeria
Tunisia

IBERIAN PENINSULA:
Portugal
Leon
Castile
Navarre
Aragon
Valencia
Cordoba
Granada

ITALIAN PENINSULA:
Genoa
Milan
Venice
Tuscany
Papal States
Rome
Naples
Sicily
Corsica (?)
Sardinia (?)
Malta (??) perhaps ISLES OF WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN SEA?

CENTRAL EUROPE:
Silesia
Poland
Bohemia
Hungary

BALKAN:
Greece
Serbia
Croatia
Bulgaria
Wallachia
Carpathia

ASIA MINOR:
Constantinople
Nicea
Trebizond
Anatolia
Rum
Lesser Armenia
Armenia
Georgia

CRUSADER STATES:
Antioch
Edessa
Tripoli
Palestine
Syria

MAMELUK STATES (EGYPT?):
Cyrenaica
Egypt
Sinai
Arabia

LEVANT ISLANDS:
Crete
Rhodes
Cyprus

levant means: The countries washed by the eastern part of the Mediterranean and its contiguous waters. (From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary)

Well, the definition of Scandinavia isn't very definite.

The definition in the Webster dictionary (http://www.webster.com) is:
Scandinavia:
1 peninsula N Europe occupied by Norway & Sweden
2 Denmark, Norway, Sweden, & sometimes also Iceland, the Faeroe Islands, & Finland

The reason for this fluffy or flexible definition is that there isn't any clear-cut alternative. Even Nordic isn't clearly defined. Webster again.....
Nordic
1 : of or relating to the Germanic peoples of northern Europe and especially of Scandinavia

Maybe I missunderstood the discussion. Is it Greographical in general, or just related to the game map?

If it's general, Moldova(Moldavia) is missing, as Albania and Slovenjia(Histria).

Not sure, I think it is relating to the game map, but someone earlier in the discussion was asking about European capitals(i think). I know most European Capitals, but most Americans don't know much geography. So sad, they don't teach it anymore, and it is one of my favorite subjects. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Thank God for college. My former high school had a rather dismal selection of classes, so I am excited to finally go to college and actually learn about the world. Not just about Western Civilization.

That is what I love about this game and this forum. It has provided me with the opportunity to learn more about different cultures and history. I always do love it when I know more about a subject than the teacher who is teaching it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Yea, that is pretty cool KillerKadugan, I had to correct my World Culture teacher in fifth grade because he mixed up the Egyptian gods http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif . Unfortunately I can't take any of those fun courses because I am a mere sophomore in highschool. Although I want to get into the student exchange program at my school so I could visit Germany.
