What's up, I was wondering what your guys' favorite war games have been besides TW?

IrishMike

Well I like : Age of Empires (all), Red Alert (all), and all the Delta Force series as well as Starcraft.

I am a fan of C&C games as well as Heores of Might and Magic(except for Heroes IV. Ugh, what a flaming bag of turd that game was) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/ceasarno.gif

Are we just talking about PC wargames, or wargames in general?

Because I've been playing Warhammer and Warhammer 40K for over a decade....

I actually don't play many PC wargames anymore. I was hooked on the Panzer General series for a while, as well as Blizzard's RTS's. Couldn't get into C&C too much, although I found Red Alert fun.

Empire Earth is one of the better RTSs out in the last few years, IMO. I didn't like the AOE series all that much, mostly due to overly irritating Priest units.

I've been playing the Blizzard RTS games since Warcraft one. Ah, that was a great game, just build a seething mass of archers, and you win every time. Other than that I have played alittle C&C and some Age of Empires.

I play RA2 because it is a nice, casual take on the RTS genre. MTW is amazing, top of the class... but sometimes, you just want to take off your thinking cap and have fun frying attack dogs with nukes. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I hear you Sarnaen, whenever I get tired of the diplomacy, espionage, and tactical altertness required to play a successful game of MTW, I just go rent Goblin Wars(for Gamecube) and play it all weekend. It has to be the most utterly simplistic strategy game i have ever played. But it is addictive and insanely hilarious. Just train a troll, upgrade your goblins and go bash things... literally. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

Well, Age of Empires (the original and Age of Kings, no expansions or other crap) was my wargaming roots (besides one or two hex-based games I played once or twice). Really liked Age of Kings. Starcraft was OK. I played the campaigns for the cool cutscenes. Couldn't get into random maps; just too hard. Empire Earth was OK. But after MTW, any game relying on hit points just didn't appeal. I haven't played any non-MTW strategy games besides those already mentioned.

wargames on PC: AoE I w/ exspansion, AoE II (age of kings) w/ exspansion, C&C back in the day (i wouldn't touch them anymore).

on the Table: Axis & Allies (all three), Napoleon in Europe, along with a bunch of smaller lesser known games.

on the Floor: Middle Earth (like Warhammer, only LoTR) as well as ACW figurines.

After the total war series...

Hearts of Iron is one I love. Axis and Allies was great on the PC or board. Long ago I enjoyed Star Wars Galaxies for all the black ops potential. Still looking for a good current space based strategy.

Anyone play PBEM games? Dragonlords is fun. Not big on the people I'm playing with right now, but the game is still fun.

Board games: RISK http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

PC: Panzer General (I still suck at it), Conflict (very old dos game).

Anyone here who plays the RTK (romance of the three kingoms) series?

Axis and Allies... great game

Tough question.

PC: Gettysburg (TW games the best though)

Amiga: Harpoon

Commodore 64: Conflict in Vietnam

Board: AH's Midway (fairly simple but exciting)

Risk for me too, though none of the computer versions. You can't beat a board.

Hi everyone http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I'm surprised no-ones mentioned Rise of Nations http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif

Very similar to Age of Empires although I no longer play it as I prefer the scale and orderly units in MTW. But for anyone that likes AoE I'd recommend trying the demo.

Sudden Strike 1 & 2 are by far the best RTS games next to MTW. It's not a click-fest like C&C or warcraft are. Placement of units and tactics are the key to winning, NOT numbers. Several AT guns and a couple of tanks placed correctly can hold off 7 times their number. Being able to destroy things on the battle map other than enemy units is real fun; i.e. destroying part of a forest to make a good clear area of fire is awesome. Morale & experience come in to play just like MTW. The HISTORICALLY accurate units are exceptional, plus the graphics are superb.

Enjoyed playing Warhammer and WartyForty on the tabletop. Also liked their board based strategy spin offs, Mighty Empires, Blood Royal, etc.

In fact Blood Royal was my fave... and features:
- a map of Europe divided into countries with provinces.
- trading goods.
- shipping and seaborne invasions.
- the Pope.
- crusades.
- alliances and alliances sealed by marrying off Princesses.
- succession problems when King and Princes die off.
- rebellions.
- natural disasters.

Sound familiar?

Currently replaying Neverwinter Nights again (level 12 ranger & level 1 rogue) . Looking to multiclass into another by the time I start hordes of underdark. Any idea guys ? Right now I'm in chapter 3 (going for the 2nd & 3rd Word of Power) going into red dragon's lair.

Started my alignment neutral but getting towards evil. Chaotic Evil right now.

I've got Sudden Strike 1 and I played it quite a lot before TW. My style just wouldn't fit that game, I began to upgrade all my units beginning from the supply trucks (shoot and repair tactics) and one mission took like 5 hours. Too slooooooooowwww. Fun during the action though.

Also tried Call of Duty but FPS games have almost no replayability value so you only get a total of 50 hours (quality) gameplay. Fun while it lasts and exp pack in Fall 2004 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif .

I've also got softer games like Settlers and a few of Sierras like Pharaoh (old but good games IMO).

Empire Earth was a dispointment, only good graphs but the AI $ucked. AOE was better with a bit worse graph.

i can recommend the old Master of Magic and Master of Orion II, round based strategy with a lot of units, buildings, different strategies - damn shame that Master of Orion III sucks badly

Besides that, I love Starcraft, the best RTS imho. Other games might be fancier and have better graphics, but the balance in this game between 3 totally different races is awesome. Jagged Alliance 2 is a also a great game where u have to use logic and tactics instead of pure build and rush.

If I had to list the 3 games I spent the most time playing it would be:
1. Tribes - the best teambased First Person Shooter ever
2. Master of Orion II
3. Descent II

I love Master of Orion III - It is buggy, bulky, and battles suck but I still love it for some reason. I've never palyed MOO2 but the original MOO is still one of my faves.

I enjoy Risk - especially the lord of the rings version.

Axis and Allies (Also known by me and my friends as Hours and Hours) is one of my long time favorites.

Diplomacy is a great game as well. Gotta love the up close and personal diplomatic underdog backstabbing. It is so fun to make deals when you are the underdog, lead them to think they have you wrapped around there finger and then BANG stab them in the back so bad that they wipe you out in the next few turns. :)

I've enjoyed the O.G. battletech game as well.

I'm just your well rounded geek.

Well, besides MTW, about the only games i really put time into recently (thats recent years) were Jagged Alliance 2 and Operation Flaspoint: Cold War Crisis.

For those who dont know them, Jagged Alliance 2 is a tactical squad based wargame, reminiscent of the X-Com series but with a distinct personality. You command mercenaries and each one is very unique. Some of the greatest one-liners in computer gaming are there.

Flashpoint is like nothing else so far. It's the only realistic (as games can be) Battlefield simulator. Saying its an FPS is a rude understatement. You have a degree of freedom unlike ANY other game out there.

Both these games have very dedicated communities (JA2 is quite old now...) that produce outstanding mods, not unlike the Totalwar community. This adds to an already huge replayability.

At this point i only play MTW and OFP, really. The only games i need. (Well... i sometimes indulge in NFS Underground...).

Well i for one can't stand 'RTS' games - click-o-thon, micromanagement, ridiculous battles that take the same amount of time as it takes to build a cathedral etc.. blaa... I grew out of them after Warcraft.

Never really got into Civ3 (i hate the fact that most of the time if you take enemy cities they 'convert' back in a few turns, taking all your occupying army with them - like, after getting massacred taking the place, they then put down their weapons and become hippies instead...) - Civ2 is actually better in my opinion.

Europa Universalis was a very good, realistic wargame/diplomatics game. However, it was a little slow and very hard

I used to play all the warcraft/starcraft/AOE/C&C games for years until one fime day i came upon(sounds bad)a single copy of STW:WE which forever ruined me for any other stategy game. Then we had MTW and then of course MTW:VI which put the final nail in the coffin of the standard format games. Now the only other games i can bear to play for any lenght of time(a week tops) are Homeworld1+2 and Championship Manager 03/04.Everything else just pales in comparison to the mighty TotalWar series.

I was just thinking about those. Can't believe I forgot them.

Although CC5 was Normandy, not ABTF.

CC1- Bocages

CC4- Battle of the Bulge
CC5- Normandy

The last two were my favs, although I got a lot of play out of Russian front. So many tanks....

Middle Earth, BattleTech, Axies and Allies
PC:
Age of Rifles, the Panzer General series (up to People's General), Civ, Romance of the three kingdoms (pc versions only), Ghengis Khan, Machiavelli the Prince (not a wargame but funny), Europa Universalis, MechCommander, the TW series of course.
I played C&C, AoE and other RTS (cossaks was quite good) games but they aren't my favorites.

I like the blizzard titles, and Age of E was ok, ground controll was a lot of fun, but I think that we are headed into a great coupel of years for war games. Dawn of War, RTW, The Lord of the Rings game. It seems devlopers are doing a good job pushing war games beyond the typical RTS formula.

Really enjoyed Lords of the Realm and its sequel. I played the original on the Amiga and it was one of the best games I had. I thought the sequel was even better Brilliant stuff But the less said about Lords of the Realm 3 the better. Has anyone played that and thought it good?

As for Total War. Well its the perfect RTS game for me. True, the diplomacy is somewhat lacking but I'm still playing the damn game ever since it came out and I can't say that with many games that I have bought over the years.

Now when Rome comes out I'm sorry but I will be a recluse https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/barrel.gif https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif . Total War heaven

yep, MTW is the ultimate in this area although an infusion of civ 3 type diplomacy would be awesome.

liked Rise of Nations for the nice graphics and treatment of things lik flank and rear bonuses and little micro.

AOE/AOK still holds some strange charm partly due to it being my intro to RTS.

Maedhros, for space strategy I always find that the Homeworld series exceeds many expectations. You did however say you wanted something new, so perhaps you already have tried them?

If not, then I implore you to take up the baton at the soonest possible moment. HW1, albeit aged, is nothing short of jaw dropping. It still has its graphical moments when I admire the sheer beauty they achieved with the tech they had back in 99, a real tear jerking plot which was extremely well written, a theme tune in the credits written especially for the game by the ProgRockers 'Yes' (legendary stuff) and the title of the first ever truly three dimensional strategy game.

There may have been older RTS's that utilised 3d terrain and so on, but in HW you move your ships up down left right, where ever you see fit.

HW:Cataclysm was the standalone sequel though not well recieved by many, developed separate from Relic (makers of the original) by Barking Dog Studios. It's story line was somewhat disatisfactory but it did have very good multiplayer.

The latest installment HW2 is also very good and slightly simpliler control wise than HW1 which was sometimes faulted for its conplexity.

No prizes for guessing my favourites eh?

Yeah in single player it is a little 'one man band' but when playing as part of a clan it can be very tactically complex at times, although having said that my clan's idea of tactics is 'Buggrit Let's all run over the bridge straight away' https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif

this is gonna be a long list...

PC

Heroe's of might and magic 3, and all the various expantions ect using this engine, it is the best turn based strat there is even now.

Command and conquer, the original, and still the best. Red alert was good fun and all, but red alert 2 really lacks in places and tiberian sun is just a load of crap.

Warcraft, I got each one as it came out, starting with the original, and warcraft 2 is still great, I don;t hold much store in graphics and 3d, and thats mainly where warcraft 3 scores over the older.

Starcraft, though it doesn;t match some other RTS it;s funny and the movies are cool

Age of empires, only got age of kings and the expantion, played them religiously untill I got MTW, and realised just how crap they were in comparison...

Bladurs gate 1 and 2, they both rock, especially as I;m an avid Roleplayer in ral life, and they ust run so fast compared to real tabletop...

Icewind dale, same goes

Homeworld 1 and 2, space combat really does it for me, to the point that I buy anything with bog ships and explosions...

Diablo 1 and 2, these do;t rate as highly as baldurs gate and co, ut for kill action they canlt be ebaten when you need to unwind after a hard day.

GTA 1, 2, 3 and vice city, all of them rock

XCom, all of them, barring intercepter which is rubbish, these brought me into turn based strat in the first place...

Incubation, aother turn based thriller that rocks, and is far more combatty than XCom.

i think thats all the important ones...
