Honor Help (Sinlge Player)

when I retrain my units they seem to alwasy loose honor, i had a unit a 2 honor and I retrained them and they had 0 (they actually had 1 but that was becasue of the gen. bonus) why is this? and if i get them at like 3 or 4 or 5 honor and up will it still happen? thx.

Ok, I know this is a dumb question, but how DO you retrain your units? I've seen the "cost of retraining" thing and have tried a few different things but haven't been able to figure it out.

ok u first have to make sure the place were u want to retrain ur troops can first create the same kind example you want to retain archers, the retraining area must be able to make archers to, anyway you click on you castle then the create troop button then with that still up click on the unit u want to retrain, then on the bottom panal where u see a picture of ur unit, left click and drag it into the create troop area (where it shows the current troops being made) and let go, thats it, I may not have explained it the best but I tried http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

the only use I have found for retraining is newbie troops without weapon but esp. armour upgrades retraining them in a province which DOES have those facilities but not the capability to train those troops, f.e. retraining a new Kensai in a province to give it the armour upgrades which it didnt have before (it's free http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif)

i retrain all the time, like when i only have like under 20 left in a given unit.

Why? it costs koku, they lose honor and all you get in return are expensive inexperienced troops...

well, there are some territories that create higher honor units of certain types, use those for retraining, as you won't lose as much honor. also, by combineing units of equal honor will help with keeping the honor up on them.(say you have a unit of 25 h3 ys, and a unit of 26 hs ys. combined, they should either remain h3, or at most only drop to h2. i personally don't retrain except to give them upgrades for weapons or armor. further...i think it's a % or ratio of men needed in the retraining that effects how much honor remains. ie...a unit of 55ys w/h3 retrained should remain h3 where as a unit of 40ys w/h3 retrained would become h2...due to the fact that 1/3 of them are now fresh, untested men.

You loose honor because: the unit honor is the average of each soldier's individual honor.

For instance, suppose after hard fighting, you are left with 30 honor 4 YS, now if retrain them in a province that can only produce honor 0 greenhorns, guess what will happen? Your unit has an average honor of 2.

ok thanks for the info. i personally would usually just combine troops with the same honor, or fill up a unit w/another unit. for example, say i have 35 YS of 3 honor, and 30 YS of the same honor in another unit. Just drag the 30 to the 35, it fills up to 60, then you have 5 left in the other, eventhough their honor might drop to 2,i still think its worth it, and then you can put the other 5 in another unit with 2 honor. So do you have to pay more to retrain troops with negative honor? If you don't, then i definitely see a good reason to retrain them.
