one question: how come most (if not all) generals shown have a huge number of stars ? Both armenian and roman and whatever else was in there, they all looked like crazy jedi's...

Very nice indeed. It is even nicer that there are several features we know about and there is no mentioning of them, which in my optimistic view lends to assume there are plenty of others we don't know about.

As for the generals, i wouldn't worry about it. This is a demo movie, they had to exaggerate some stuff to make it work as predicted or to show off a certain feature.

Like the bombardment by catapults in that fight...

I believe these are just demo scenarios - you know Killer Stacks and Uber Leaders. The only exception to this that I have seen is the "Eastern Expedition" against the Selucids.

THAT Roman general is a no talent bum who comes up against the cream of Selucid generalship. The outcome isn't even close.

Check out the German Gamestar video that shows the seige of Corinth. This scenario looks a bit more realistic in terms of unit sizes, #'s and skills.

Blodrast

ok, i guess the demo explanation does make sense...
but man, those catapults do some devastating damage ...
I wonder if they really had that big an impact, though; in my (admittedly limited) imagination, getting a rock (or whatever, even a decent-sized boulder) and pouring some flammable spirit on it, then setting it on fire and launching it is not that bad...sure, it might kill/maim 3-4 people, but surely it's not a ping-pong ball to bounce indefinitely...it would just get stuck in the ground. 'Cause I'm pretty sure 2 people can't load too big a boulder in a catapult, and that boulder can't kill more than a handful of people...
But in the game they seem to cause dozens of casualties...
you guys with more historical background, any explanation ?
What am I missing, were they using other projectiles than simple rocks ??

DemonArchangel

Well, if you look closely, some people get back up after the shock throws them to the ground.

Husar
07-14-2004, 21:29
I wonder about that, too.
It looks like the Romans only need to stop the enemy with infantry and the artillery does the rest, these projectiles are exploding, to me it looks like 2nd WW. https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
And in that video battles seem to be very short, I hope that won´t be the case, especially not with those catapults, if the romans get heavy artillery, the germans should get machine guns. https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I had this same feeling watching Time Commanders: is seems they accelerated the game a bit to make it more lively. However we don't get to see anything like a full battle, just a quick cinematic of it. I'm sure they are bound to be just as fast or slow as in M:TW.

(Actually maybe slower on average since you have bigger maps, and from what i've read its more unlikely to build a ubber all conquering army because of how they seemed to tweak unit upgrading)

@Blodrast

Others may provide more precise information, but i seem to remember reading somewhere that armor and weapon upgrades where going to be toned down (if not removed) and the bonus (or equivalent in Rome) a unit gets from a General would also be limited to morale and perhaps discipline.

I am sure these are important balance issues that haven't been yet disclosed as definitive but the trend seemed to be that it would be harder to build Invincible armies.

Well, I watched this thing and was glad I did. The strategic aspects that I hadn't seen before were most interesting.

However, the resolution isn't all that great in this movie. Nor is the game action all that smooth. It is neat to see some of the features presented but earlier videos are more flattering.

Thanks to that opening scene in Gladiator, from a distance the onagers look like a katyusha battery circa 1943. The hell that Maximus unleashed landed smack on Rome:Total War. D'oh

I wouldn't get too bent out of shape over the battles in the video. Most of what they were showing us was for the "wow" effect. For example, 2-3 times they showed Romans climbing a ladder only to get knocked over by their own onager projectiles. Who in their right mind would target their onagers to knock down a section of wall in which your own men are trying to scale? But it looked pretty cool, didn't it? Of course, we also saw lots of shots with the "wow" units: elephants, onagers and rearing horses. How practical will it be to field an army with that many onagers in a real game/campaign?

I did like a whole lot of what I did see in the video. The strategic level of the campaign looks good with many more options to spice up the game. That 16 minute video gave me a better sense of how the game will play than every thing else I'd seen or read about up to this point. I'm liking this game very much. I just pre-ordered it on Wednesday and I never pre-order things. https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/ceasaryes.gif

Yeah I noticed the thing with the onagers too. It didnt leavem e going wow though. I loved the idea of the generals giving a speech before each battle. That was f****** awesome. Nice and epic. The only problem though is moddng that feature. For the China mod, it might be difficult. But hopefully do-able. Also werent the flaming pigs taken out?

Btw, Greg, how much did it cost to pre-order?

The pre-order was $5 (US) at EB Games, which also got me a RTW DVD (while supplies last). The DVD was disappointing: a 2 minute news story on RTW, the official trailer (2 minutes), 10 screen shots (3 "exclusive"), and 10 images of concept art. The only thing interesting was seeing the faces of Michael DePlater, Tim Ansell and Mike Simpson...and the very nice red t-shirts with the RTW logo on them.

Regardless of this, of the nuclear blast catapult problems, etc... ...it's still a great video I enjoyed the strategical map quite a lot. https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif

I showed the video to some of my (non-gamers) work mates, they were quite impressed.
Some didnt' quite believe when i told them that was the way it actually looked and played. Even with all the explanations it was hard for them to believe it was not just a "movie".

I just saw a bunch of pre-order boxes at Best Buys. $10 gets you a $10 coupon. Also a "battle map", whatever that might be.

No minimum specs on the box at all.

here i have an idea on what is happening,

have you ever had an MTW battle where an ally joined in and he had artillery?
your ally uses the artillery against whatever he can reach and he cares NOT ONE BIT that he is also taking out your troops with it.

Well if i understand the RTW engine armies controlled by relatives will be your to command, but if the general is not a relative the AI will command it,

So most likely (in that video) the AI "allied" army is almost entirely onagers and your "ally" goes berserk with them.

I wonder what will happen if you attack an allied army on the field, will that army go rebel or will you go rebel?

(thats something i have done once or twice in mtw, take out the damn allied artillery that are wiping out my own men..)

Cheers,
B.

^good call. Hopefully CA has noticed this and will improve the AI to take into account whether or not their artillery is hitting allied troops and react accordingly: Say if it's killing enemy:friendly at a 10:1 ratio, keep firing, but if the kill ratio is lower, it should stop, hitting your own siege forces should always be a no-no.

Also the fact that Artillery is moveable now means that they no longer are a stationary weapon. In the latest trailer, you can see the Roman Cavalry has brought a compliment of Catapults and Ballistas, you can see in the background how devastating these are, as siege towers and ladder and blow away https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
