What benefit does this really give a player? Once you accept the portugese trade agreement you can build the trading post which allows you to train arquebusiers. So, why build churches and become Christian?
LOL. I was thinking that this is a religious question in general. Hmm come to think of it.. why should one be Christian?

As a member of the dyslexic agnostic society, I must say this is not a good thing to do.
We do not believe in DOG.
Here's what to do: build all the Portugese Trading Posts you want, and then just build a temple. Bing, bang, boom. You're now Buddhist, but you have priests and trade with the Portugese. If you build another Portugese Trading Post, you'll convert back tho.
The only reason to STAY Christian is if you wanna go all the way and get a Cathedral and get Muskets early on.
Or, as Cat said, just for the hell of it.

I accepted the portugese and just built a Gun Factory and never had to build a church. With gun factory you get muskets or arqubi's ...

According to the docs provided with the game, Buddhists are hesitant to attack Monks because of the porta-shrine that they carry around w/ them. Apparently the porta-shrine does not impress the Christians.

You get 100 koku per Church in all of Japan (not just your lands) if you have a Cathedral.
Monks do not scare your troops as much. And muskets make short work of shock troops.

I asked this elsewhere without luck- what precise effects does the monks shrine have in statistical terms, and what counts as Christian and what doesn't- Rebels, Mongols, in MP and Custom etc. Please. There may be a small cash reward.

Only Daimyo's with the cross symbol are Christian.
I havn't seen a revolt of christains yet. I think they do so but belong to a particular christian Daimyo.
As far as MP is concerned I think everyone is non christian (not sure how Mongols count).
I put it this way if your troops run from the shrine they were not going to win in HTH in the first place so it is a wise choice.

actually in single a campaign with Shimazu as christian ( on expert ) could be very challenging especially if u meet the Hojo Horde , because of buddhist revolts that appears anywhere especially when ur number of troups from that province is low or even lack ;if the amount of buddhist is big there and u are a christian daimyo u can espect revolts; the same thing it can happen if u are a buddhist daimyo and u conquer a province with a large amount of christian; when the revolt will start u`ll see a image that tells u that christian samurais are revolting ;

Oh, convert to christian so that you can have everything:
two trading posts (a potentially 400 koku boost)
Early guns
cathedral (optional, for there IS downside in building cathedral) to collect more money from the churches
You can still build temples for warrior monks.
In another word, turning christian gives you all the benifit without costing you anything at all.
(BTW, I changed my icon picture. The previos one was too awesome.)

Yeah, you get money from all the churches once you build a cathedral...although i've never seen the option to build a gun factory, i know you can, but i've never seen one. damn, i really still have a lot to learn. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

In life..... "after" life insurance. No one can actually prove it, but what could it hurt.
In game..... 1. koku ++, 2. guns early before 80's, when the dutch finally arrive, 3. priests

after building the cathedral, you can spend the extra koku to bribe monks. also...once you conquer a territory that has an upgraded temple, it only gets damaged, so you are left with a buddist temple anyway. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
