i am thinking of tryign to make a simple mod based on the city states in italy. In the medieval period. I would like to start it in the 11th century.

Sounds a good idea. Are you planning making a new map or adding provinces on the normal medieval map? Both are possible but time consuming mate. Once the map is done though it gets alot easier from there mate.

Welcome to the org by the way https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

What kind of timeframe are you looking at for this mod? 11th century (1087?) till when?

i have changed my mind slightly and i think i shall base it in the 12th century, to about the 15th century, as before then power moves around to much, as the byzantine then the normans invade south italy, the rest gets invaded by the holy roman emperor. I think it woudl get to complicated and difficult. After the 15th century you have the frech, germans and french fighting over italy. I would like to keep it fairly simple. So i will just have italian states

hear are some ideas for factions: papacy, siciallians, vencice, genoa, naples, florence,

if you have anymore ideas please tell me

What about Siena for a faction? I recall it was quite powerful in the 13th century although it was greatly weakened by Florence.

The Pisans?

i agree with you about siena being a major faction, i feel the pisians would be a rebel state as they became part of the republic of Florence

i have come up with some more myself: milan, savoy

i think i will also have ferrara, modena, mantua in the north as rebels, with some of the area surrounding venice beign rebel as it was not till later that ti became part of the republic. i am getting most of my factions and my map will be similiar in regions to this one.

i have found a few specialist units, can already use the genoese sailors, in a source i also found that the pisans and genoans had very good crossbowmen

Also on the Osprey theme I'd recommend The Venetian Empire 1200-1670 for some ideas on the armies.

thanks for the help, these are the factions at the moment

savoy?, feudal
papacy, feudal
milan, city state
siena, city state
venice, city state
naples, feudal
sicily, feudal
florence, city state
genoa, city state

i have also found that the city states elite were mainly mercenaries from what are called conditorri.
there militia specilaised in crossbow and arqubesters and handguns. They had pikemen later on. mounted arqubusters. For the mercenaries i had two ideas one is to have them just as normal mercenaries however if that does not work i can have them as normal units but with low loyalty. The elite knights were called gendarme and were equally as good as the french knights. later on the ventians got stradiots which were half european half turkish light cavs from the balkans. there were big objects pulled by oxen which had the cities colours on the them and i thougth i might use a similiar system as the generals in ntw.

i am still looking for a map and i would welcome a volunteer to do the map for me, please

always open to sugestions

With the geography and shape of Italy being as it is, wouldn't it be best (if possible) to use the Viking Invasion map and modify it to look like Italy. This would allow you to get a lot of detail in, with lots of provinces (you could include the coast of the Adriatic if you wanted).

The shape of the MTW map is not ideal at all unless you put Italy on its side for the map.

If I was you I'd take the original map (or any other euro map) and stretch it, then making room for the italian city states...
If you could make it like that it could be interesting, I don't think you even need much stretching, something like 15-30%. You could still zoom out and it would look the same map as default, except the castles would appear smaller, allowing smaller provinces.
Think about it.

Btw, great idea, I like the period, though I can't remember Macchiavelli's home city... (shame)
