Okay, so in a fit of boredom I installed the much-praised Medmod and jumped into the campaign as Sicily.
The first thing I saw was the fact that Sicily can build Nubian Spearmen, Futuwwas, Mamluk horse archers and Murabitin Infantry.
What the hell...? Is this a mistake? Why can a Catholic faction build Islamic fanatics, an Egyptian unique unit, African muslim spearmen and an Almohad unique unit?
I know that Sicily was Muslim at one point, and rueld by Catholic overlords, but surely, these units are out of place?
I really, really hope that my installation went wappy...

. https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Hi m8, I think Wes probably knows his stuff,
And the Sicilians definately used North african troops, as the Spanish did. On the other side of the coin. Many Muslim armies had christian components and enslaved ex-christian units (e'g Janissaries and Ghulams) Soldiers had to travel to get work in those days. Those Varangians used to travel thousands of miles to serve in the Byzantine army.

Nothing wrong with your install.

The Sicilians used Muslim units often in a mercenary capacity, especially Saracen Archers, Spearmen and Horse Archers. Saracen to christians was also synonamous with Arabs.
Within the confines of the unit limit, which is reached with MedMod, the choices make perfect sense.

Futuwwas aren't actually muslim fanatics either. Futuwwa is roughly the Muslim equivalent of Chivalry and is rather a code of honour and on the peaceful path of life,

Futuwwa also signifies that one makes altruism and helping others one’s second nature and does no one any harm. It is an important, indispensable dimension of good conduct and a significant aspect of humanity.

A serious misnomer for a unit if there ever was one...

The only questionable one would be Murabitin Infantry as murabitin actually means inhabits a Ribat, so they are unlikely to have shopped out to christians but once again the unit limit is maxed and this was a playability and balance choice.
