Is there any tutorials around that give details on different battle strategies and demonstrate them with game replays? I've read lots on the basic usage of each unit but they all leave it up to you to find techniques of applying each unit's abilities.

I've read and seen some descriptions of real historic battles and drawings of the army formations and there movements, showing how the battle went and why it was successful in the way it was. All these were used as examples of how to perform a specific tatic. I'm wondering if anything like this has been done.

Frogbeasteggs two guides, A Beginner's Guide to Medieval Total War and The Complete Total War Unit Guide contain useful tips about how to use units in a tactical (rather than strategic sense). She gives very clear suggestions as to how to make the most of each units abilities - well worth a read if you haven't already.

The replay idea is an excellent one, but I am not sure if you can select portions of battles to replay. Wathcing an comlete battle for 20 seconds of action to illustrate a point may not be worth it.

Practice is your friend. I had it easy as I played a lot of STW before starting on MTW (which is more complex compared to STW).

Remember that you are operating an army, not a collection of units. There is a frontline, support, flanks (left and right) and a rear. Units operate together, supporting each other. Certain units are suited in different areas and tasks. There is no fixed way of forming up an army or determining the unit composition either. Personal taste, terrain and the opposing army comes into play. Also, the culture (catholic, orthodox or muslim) affects your unit types and choices, and hence the style of fighting.
