Get both. https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
You can get STW for a mere $10 these days and it has great features that MTW doesn't have: seasons, the videos, etc. On the other hand, the STW mod incorporates more of the new and better features from MTW into the STW game, but, alas, the mod is still a work in progress and lots to do yet according to barocca.

why not get both. The Shogun mod is free and STW is as good as free (price of a couple of https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif ). You don't like one try the other.
Btw I got STW & MI after I had MTW and found it an enjoyable diversion.

You have to create a shortcut for each mod. One shortcut named STW mod pointing to Medieval_TW.exe in MTW folder with the STW mod and a second shortcut pointing to the Medieval_TW.exe in the MTW folder with the HTW mod installed. Put these shortcut wherever you keep your game icons (Games folder, desktop, etc) and then just click on the one you want to play.

I wanted to get STW a few months back but decided against it when I learnt there could be problems if it is run on Windows XP. But I've downloaded the Shogun mod for MTW and hopefully it'll be just as good because I have a keen interest in feudal Japan.
works fine on my XP m8.also, IMHO STW is better than MTW, an opinion shared by others, it has a superior atmosphere ansd seasonal turns are genius https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

The STW mod looks really good though so I think I will try that. I'm going to need several installs of MTW at this rate because I'm currently playing the excellent HTW https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/barrel.gif

thanks greg https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif *runs to get stw mod*
the atmosphere in shoggy is unbeatable. I love the fog and lightning effects. nothing like being ambushed by a pack of warrior monks emerging from the fog. I could swear that I even heard a wolf howl once.
the ninj movies are also awesome
