It has happened a few times that when I have a King with 9 influence it suddenly, after a few years, drops to nothing. Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm thinking that a few years of sitting idle makes you lose influence but I can't recall whether it happens to a King with less than 9 influence. Any thoughts? Damned annoying https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif .

Actually, when my empire has reached decent size, I never take my emperor out of the capital, as it would make half empire revolt, especially if king lost a battle or went on an island and was cut off.
So long the armies march I can keep the influence at 9 stars. But as soon you get your emperor die of illness and replaced by a heir- 1-3 stars. Odd. Then you need to again conquest more, or else the low influence will destroy the empire. Vicious cycle, although, it doesn't hurt me half as much as my neighbours https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The weird thing is though is that the same King one year, with 9 influence, suddenly has as much influence as a badger in the next. Sitting idle for a few years shouldn't dent influence by THAT much.

I'd be interested to know what algorithm the game actually uses to calculate a King's influence.
Whenever my King dies and his heir inherits the throne his influence always seems to be around 4 or 5 regardless of the size of my realm (although if I've started in a 1 province faction it an be higher https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif). This makes sense I suppose as new Kings always had to take time to assert their control of their newly acquired kingdom and reassure loyalties.
Influence can drop suddenly for no reason though. I find if I have a lot of disloyal provinces my kings influence is down, but I'm not sure which one is causing the other. Young Kings also seem to have low influences as well (King Henry in my English campaign became King a year after coming of age - a close one to losing the campaign).

I think the factors are:
- number of regions conquered during reign
- length of reign
- command ability of King
- number of troops built during reign

I'm sure there are others.

Good acumen is a factor also I think. I remember in one of my campaigns when a Russian heir became Grand Prince he immediately had 5 influence and his acumen was 6.

It's almost as if when you reach 9 influence the eyes of the world are on you and must continue to uphold that status otherwise you will head for a fall. Come to think of it in the description for 9 influence it does say something about that.

A fall from grace can be as spectacular as a rise.

I think. Bit of a ominous thing to say to your King. I'd have had that advisor hung for suggesting that God would ever lose favour in such a glorious lord as myself.

Yes, stick his head on a spike or something. As far as I'm concerned the only thing high influence is good for is instilling loyalty in your generals.

It's a bug that makes your current king (that has 9 influence) lose all his influence, but he will quickly regenerate it again (atleast 1-2 influence a turn).

The only problem with this is that you can get a matured heir during this time and he will probably suck and the troops produced during this time are unusually disloyal.

And some screens of that
