The mature King Alfonso,4th of that name, took control of the Kingdom of Spain in the year of our lord 1114 A.D.He had been left in a strong position by his father who had been unable to build up the economy as he was busy reclaiming all of the Iberian peninsula from the Hordes of Islam(Almohads) and the pretenders to the throne of Spain(Aragonese).Still, the treasuary was strong and the kingdom was secure and at peace.
Alfonso reflected upon what it was to be a king and eventually decided that ensuring the continuation of the family line and strong borders was the only consideration.
With this in mind he set out to establish trade routes and to increase farming through-out holy Spain.
However, events were to take a turn when his 2 strongest allies came to blows and he was forced to chose betwixt them.Did he chose the heretofor peaceful Egyptians or the influencial Byzantines.
Money i am afraid to say was the deciding factor as the bountiful harvests of Egypt were to be seen just across the borders of our lands.
A holy crusade was launched with the full blessing of the Pope, although some would have it said that a financial contribution towards the new basilica being built in Rome was required, but who could contemplate the holy father doing such a thing?
Egypt fell in short order and shortly there-after a second holy undertaking wrested controll of the Sinai from the heathens also. This second crusade was led by the heir to the throne,Prince Pedro.
The following year a huge army of Egyptians under the leadership of their most feared general......a man who had a rank of six as such military men judge such things, invaded our new province.Prince Pedro decided to fight even though he had both inferior numbers and quality of troops.
It was the archers of Spain and those wily Jinettes who saved the day.A close thing it was however as the men of Spain lost 1118 men to 1119 Egyptians. The following year saw a much more decisive victory however.

This victory was tinged with sadness however as King Alfonso, the magnificent builder King of Spain died of old age at the grand age of 66.
Now in the year 1140 A.D it is the turn of King Pedro.

God save the King
