Ok this is what gets me. People are yapping on about silly units like dogs and pigs.but after seeing the egyptian vido on the flash site Iv noticed some zulus on the battle field. This is very strange since first they come from south africa and secondly Zulus wernt zulus until th 19th century. Or am i mistaken? Has anyone got any info on these units. http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

CA:
Guy 1: Hey so we have these Nubians - they're pretty cool, hey?
Guy 2: Yeah but you know what would make them even COOLER? ZULU SHIELDS1
Guy 1: Yeah man
*high five*
welcome to ca's fantasy world, because apparantly it's too historically correct http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

The whole community seems to be very concerned that the CA boys have 'sold out' and sacrificed historical accuracy for easily recognisable symbols and things.
Probably to make the game more appealing to a larger more lucrative market of stupid people. Thank god for modding. Let's just hope some of the junk isn't hardcoded.
Zulus..... tsk

I dont care as long as the game mechanics and playability are good someone possibly myself will set about REMOVING the offending fantasy warriors. http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Well , if those were not the shields the Nubians used in that time period {such a coincidence of design wouldn't be that unusual , the shield design isn't all that unique after all} , then what should they look like ?
Post some sources . If you can prove your point , then perhaps you could get C/A to change it ; the game isn't considered ready for release by C/A just yet , and it is but a minor detail that could be easily changed .
The thing is that Nubians, (particularly Nubian footsoldiers, there might have been some Nubian cavalry...), do not seem to have been a substantial part of the armies of Ptolemaic Egypt. So it is not just a matter of wrong shield, but of wrong unit. However, considering the current largely anachronistic/fantasy roster of Egyptian units, those Nubians with Zulu shields are quite consistent and almost make perfect sense...
There were Nubians in the service of Egyptian rulers in the days of Pharaonic Egypt, up to about a thousand years before the start of RTW. Most seeem to have been bowmen, and therefore not used any type of shield.

Hm the shield doesn't seem wrong anymore after I have seen a Egypt painting where between the slain Nubians shields of more or less the same shape are depicted in blue and red IIRC - I'll try to find it and to post a link...
BTW a nice first post; but when you are the Angadil from the .com I wouldn't had expected it otherwise http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
A warm welcome to the .org

Did anyone else notice that the Egyptian Army seemed to include Ancient Egyptian units? By the time of RTW, the Army of Egypt and Selecuidia should be like the army of Macedonia with Phalanxes and Hospilites.

Well observed historycesaer, it was and it is a topic hotly debated here - well in the original .org forum, which will come back soon..
Also a warm welcome to you http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif on the .org

I know just about everyone has had there two cents about these FANTASY warriors an such but does it realy matter in the end. The roman faction's look great and if having silly Iberian warrior wizards gets the game to sell well then surely thats good as it will mean more Total war in the future as has been stated before we will set about modding the offending units out sharpish. There's just one thing that bug's me what do we put in say for the celtic or germanic factions a non fantasy mod would doubtless gut them of units http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
well here's another thing the Zulu's are good for,
combine them with the English from the Lordz NTW mod and we have an easy setup for Anglo Zulu Wars Mod.
Isandlawana and Rorkes Drift here we come

It would be nice to have a switch in the realism settings.
Unlimited Ammo on/off
Unlimited Time on/off
Fantasy Units on/off
or
Fantasy/Real but wrong time/Real and right time/HC
Then all you do is code into the spreadsheet a fantasy column.
F = Fantasy
R = Real
T = Real but wrong time (like having units that died out a thousand years before or gunpowder in Macedonia in 500 BC).
HC = Hardcore real (as accurate as we can depict).
Then just code the more interesting er fantasy units as F and only available when Fantasy mode is switched on.

Thank you, I also wondered if RTW will give you any special boni for becoming Pharaoh of Egypt. I know that very few Ptlomeys were also Pharaoh, and that being Pharaoh meant that the gold of Egypt was in your hands.

Bah, forget the zulus. They will be defeated by ColdKnights evil, dark, forest trolls from the German Forest. I am hopping they make the final game cut for the celts.:D http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
No but seriously, the zulu like units could make for a intersting mod. Zulu vs British Empire. I only wish i could mod.

strange that my brother's a re-enactor of that period. He even went to SA to fight some zulus a few years ago.
would be cool if we could get guns to work on the engine too.
Plug time
If anyone wants to follow that up (unlikely but i'll give it a try)
Try the diehard company website (www.thediehards.co.uk)
for uniforms or a laugh or something.
My bro is the one with the bugle.

Thanks for the welcome OA http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif A link to that Egyptian painting would be much appreciated... Not that I doubt that Nubians fighting against Egyptians in the old, old days (any idea as to the dating of that painting?) used shields like those of the RTW Zulus. As someone else said, that type of shield is not exactly uncommon... I'm just curious...
That picture (and a number of similar ones) show that the Nubians had hand-to-hand fighters, but, although I've looked for evidence of them serving the Pharaohs (the old Pharaohs) as spearmen, it seems they were always hired as archers... Well, or medjay policemen... In any case, that was way before RTW, but if any one can help...

Sorry Angadil, wasn't yet able to digg the link and the photo up, it drives me a bit crazy I confess... anyway IIRC New Kingdom
Anyway the Nubian tribes were famous for the Archers for over 3000 years, they get mentioned even in the Battle of Arsuf IIRC, togheter with black pikemen
Nubian archers used Egypt composit bows, longbows of palmwood, Persian Style composite bows, Byz style composite bows, doublecurved ones withour recurved tips.... the list is long indeed
Arrows were made of stone, copper and iron; The forms vary incredibly..
Cheers

Well, as we've figured out, the guys look semi-normal for the era's Nubians... Although, also, as stated, they shouldn't be there Egypt should have some phalanx units with fully-fledged phalangites, and it looks an aweful lot like that isn't going to happen

I ask you- where are the finnish fur traders? They had warships and wore class quality armour and weapons and they did like to sing a lot.
Then again I'm thankful finland has been mostly ignored by them- it horrifies me how wrong they could get everything.
