I love the ones in the forest. I have always hated fighting in trees. But now I might actually enjoy it. http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

more importantly, if you take a look at the third one at the top, the one of the stratigic map, you´ll see that half the map is covered in snow http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
at the lower right corner behind the "IGN.COM" sign, you can see the year (243 BC) and a snowflake. Perhaps this means seasonal turns..... http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I think the turn system is every 6 months. So the game is time runs for 300 years, so we will have around 600 turns which sounds good to me http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

More importantly, I can't spot any head hurlers or "chosen" axemen among the barbarian ranks.
Yeah its 2 turns a year. One in the summer, and one in the winter.

A thing I noticed is that obviously, provinces are back in. I find the strategic map looks really nice with all the little details.
But another thing: the trees in the other screens are way out of proportion. I mean, in the second forest battle pic, there stand men directly besides the treetrunk on the left. What sort of tree is that supposed to be?

Baaah, I would prefer a massive 1200 turn campaign http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif this pansy 600 turns sounds dull http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Anyhow, glad they didnt go with the shitty year-long turns from MTW http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

I like the larger trees. And I'm sure that some trees had to be this large. True, not every one would be, but the smaller ones would probably be on the outside of the forest, since a tree wouldn't live if it were much smaller than the others (wouldn't get sunlight). And there are trees that big in California...although I know the game isn't set there...but you see my point. http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

But there were never giant red woods in Europe. Those trees are either spruces or firs, which never even remotely are of that size. It looks surreal.
I like the pictures, but everytime I open the third one, explorer says an error has occured, ask if it should send an error-report and then, regardless of what I do, closes down all IE windows. That includes the window which contains this forum.
Does someone have any idea what's causing this?

I think they made the trees this big so you can actually see something on the battlefield.
Think of this, why would cav have any problems in these kind of forests? http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
And the barbarians in the first shoot is getting a cold http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif and how realistic is that?
Edit: We want coat dressed barbarians in the winter in nothern Europe, right?
Edit2: Headhurlers is nothing compared to this.

Agreed, its wuite stupid that they have the naked dudes for the northerners. They';; get pnemonia. But did any one else notice that unit list of an army, that had both green and red troops? Perhaps it was a lone from an ally or something?

Now that you say it... in the next picture you see the green cavalry on the field with the red banner.
On the trees
I don't mind them, at least now i can see what my troops are doing when they get in a fight amidst a forest, in mtw it could get rather difficult at times.
on the green troops
if i had to take a guess, i'd say those are troops recruited from Gaul, if you notice the Julii have taken a large piece of gaul when these screens were taken. They could represent soldiers who hail from non roman lands.

Yeah I like how the trees look, it works for GAMEPLAY. It does immurse you in the fact you are fighting in a forest, where as in MTW and STW woods were just some small obstacle you passed through most of the time.

It immures you in the fact that you´re playing a game while you should have the feeling of a real battle. This is maybe ants fighting in a forest, but not soldiers. I´m not asking for the nuisance trees were in MTW but this is a lame solution to a gameplay problem. Look at Dungeon Siege to see how a forest looks realistic without hindering gameplay.
in the old forum. One of the CA people said that the green units are mercenaries. The topic was brought up, with the screenshot found on gamespot.com there in the camp map the roman army had green and red units.
They surely didn't think of sparing us of the eye-sore on the campaign map; it's shining with red and green and a horrible pink ..
One more ting, the general leading the roman army is Cnaeus Cecina. In one older interview, a developer (Ian Roxburgh IIRC) said that only generals of your familican run provinces; I wonder if generals not of your family can run your armies?
Nowake it has been established that while the family alone can control armies (barring the 'captains' or leaderless armies), you can expand the family by marriages and other means. I guess this guys just that, 'another means'.

I have trees that big in my back yard. Maybe if some of you guys came over to the Midwestern US, you would see that trees that big aren't unrealistic at all.
And I seriously do have trees that big in my back yard, where you can't wrap your arms around them. The inaccurate part in the screen is the lack of smaller trees and underbrush... that's what makes cavalry ineffective in forests, unless the underbrush has been cleared out by all the little woodland creatures.
This long ago in the RTW timeframe forests were much larger and followed more closely the original cycle nature envisioned for it with the bulk of trees being giant ones (like redwoods) and having small amounts of underbrush grow in between forest fires, fires that the larger trees could withstand and continue to grow.
EDIT: I looked at the trees again after I posted... they are rather big... Not way too big to completely null what I just said, but big enough to continue CA's quest to turn RTW into a freaked out LotR game.

I guess the creatures who cleaned up the underwood, are Woodelves and the trees can walk if you talk nice to them http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

The Ents are too small, size wise these trees are about 300-400 meters high firs (or a simular tree type), else they aren't propotional.
So to be correct these troops have been exposed to a shrinking machine and are about 1,8 dm high. http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I the winter shoot it isn't that bad, they are probably around 3,5 dm here. http://212.238.194.39/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

erm, maybe I missed that. I'm not convinced they are provinces. Last I heard they were areas of influence of whatever forts there were there, i.e., the bigger a fort, the larger its area of influence. I thought they were pretty specific that provinces are out of the game, and it's all influence areas of your settlements ?...
