Usergroups:- whats that all about then.

Nice new site Dudes,
I noticed there are a few things, I either missed on the the first site or are new to the forum and was wondering whats the lowdown on joining usergroups.

uhm, you mean something different from JuniorPatrons, SeniorPatrons, Members, etc ?
I thought these were the user groups, and they're the same as before, right ?
or is this not what you are talking about ?

That's one example- what does that "roaming around" mean? Is it a rank, a title or what?

What IS the story with the user groups.I was a senior patron before the forums crashed.Then i was a Junior patron again while we were all living in Tosas' server.now nothing is showing up under my name.I'm a nobody..........my mother always said it would happen. ~;)

Spartiate: When the forum was moved, some messages were (probably temporarily) lost; not everything was backed up; the last few days before the crash, presumably.
This includes user group modifications such as promotion from Junior to Senior Patron.
I realize that it's unpleasant, but then again a crash isn't nice for anyone ~:)

After passing 500 posts, you can choose a custom "title", shall we call it; in your example, it's that "roaming around". You can put any text in there; until 500 posts, you have a "standard" title, e.g. mercenary till 100 posts, knight from 100 to 150 or 200, etc. I don't know them by heart.
Anyway, once a Senior Patron or member you can use your own custom avatar (the small picture next to your name). At least that was with the old forum. I am sure that will be available once the old forum is back on track. With this one there are very few avatars, as you have probably already noticed.

This forum, on this server, is where we'll be staying indefinitely. The Admins are still importing/pruning/tweaking the software to make it as user-friendly as possible. We won't be "returning" to the old forum/server, due to it's instability.

Some content & administrative actions haven't yet made the migration to this board, tho' I expect it to by this weekend. After that, any mistakes, delays in promotion, etc, we'll handle as they come up. Post counts are going to be less than you might think they should be, because the counting apparatus wasn't always turned on during our travels through Tosa's home server.

But, again: post count is irrelevant to advancement. We'll get a new omnibus promotion list up by Sunday, if all goes as planned.

Meanwhile, welcome to the Org, all newcomers! I hope to meet and greet all of you individually, as soon as I find my way through all these posts. :)

Hi Blodrast, I can't find the right page now (typically). But when I was editing my profile, reseting my password etc. I was given the option to join upto three user groups. Junior Patrons, Awaiting authorisation and Guest. I recognise them as membership levels but wasn't sure why I had the option to join them. Or if I was about to demote myself. I tried joining but nothing seemed to happen. So I was just wondering if anything was supposed to happen.

I've pasted below the relevant section: bottom line is, you have 500 posts or have been around for 4 months + (this is _really_ new, must be at most a few weeks old rule), you get to choose your own avatar, etc.
Same goes for title (i.e., over 500 posts or possibly 4 months here, you get to set your own title; until then, you're mercenary, knight, duke, count, etc).



Ranks and Avatars
The old UBB board had a rank system, it was something simple like make 10 posts and you are a ronin, make 200 more and you are samurai hero. You had to make 1,000 posts, which could result in a custom avatar. Many wanted a rank system when we moved to the new board, so one was implemented. However, in mid-2004 after a discussion about avatars, it was decided to ease up on the 500 posts requirement needed to select your own avatar. Currently avatar selection occurs once a patron reaches 500 post or has been at the Member level for 4 months. This change benefits those who have been around for a while but don't post very much. Regarding avatar pictures, there are a few hundred avatars to select from and more are added periodically. For Members and higher, they have the option of using Custom Avatars via their Control Panel.



oh yeah, I forgot: about the 3 user groups you can join: same thing appears to me, and I have not a clue what the hell it means. I don't see its point or purpose, so sorry.
Maybe Gregoshi or Papewaio can shed some light on this one ?
I mean, if I'm a member, why would I care to have the option to join the Guest group or whatever?

Oh, and btw: I just checked again, and I may have been wrong about the signature above:
apparently that was the rule for the old board, but right now, I can choose my own avatar (although I haven't been a Member for 4 months +, nor do I have a count of 500 posts yet), and I can also set my own signature.
So I guess currently all it takes is being a Member...

Edit again: same goes for signature, title and avatar. I can apparently set all three of them.
