I looked in the guides for this but the links were down.
I am starting my first campaign as the Russians, and my qu is, what buildings is it not worth building because you don't get any units from them? EG on a quick look there didn't seem to be much benefit from any of the swordsmith buildings as the Russians don't seem to be able to make any of the sword armed infantry?
Thanks

IIRC swordsmith (or one of its upgrades) is required to build Druzhina Cavalry (in MTW:VI).

Spearmaker to get Rus Spears (solid spears like chiv sgts). Spear (2) gives armoured spears (which are slightly weaker than Rus spears!)
Horse breeder(2) + swordsmith(1) for Druzhina Cav. Unless the enemy consists of archers, always dismount them for Feudal Foot.
Millita gives the same as catholic factions.
Horse breeder(3) + Armourer(3) gives boyars.
Horse farmer for plain HAs and mounted x-bows..
Bowyser(1) archers.

Could be me but those armoured spearmen have less morale than the plain spearmen.

Then no Druzhina Cav and Feudal Foot.
Novgordians/Russians have to fight Turk style, without any suitable swords. Halbs are available in High, but can be pretty crappy without suitable morale boosting.

I tend to approach this from the other direction. Provinces, in general, are either cash cows or unit producers. I decide what type of unit, if any, I want to build in the province and then develop the province accordingly.
It's not efficient to build every type of building in every province. Specialize your provinces so that they build fewer types of unit but at a better quality.
Some provinces, like Sweden (rich and iron bearing), make a good case for being either type and so whether I put the emphasis on one route or the other depends on whether I need the troops or the money more.
