Hello to all,

this is my first post to this forum and I apologize for making it something of a 'throwaway' thread. So that they don't get lost in the waffle this is about to turn into, I'll post my real questions separately. ~;)

The Story So Far...

I can't claim to have played STW from the week it first came out. I didn't read any pre-release stuff, I didn't see it reviewed in any mags or TV shows, I just stumbled across it in a shop one day and thought "hmmm, this looks like fun". In my youth I'd mucked around with hex-map + cardboard chip type wargames (some of which now live in the loft) and this was the first decent-looking, 3D gfx wargame I'd encountered which looked like it was worth the money.

Naturally, I played the 'Easy' campaigns first, won with at least three different clans before hearing about the 1.1 patch. Installed that and repeated the process from the beginning, eventually achieving total victory will all six clans, proving the documentation's claim of equal balance for all sides. Bit of a struggle for the Shimazu, to begin with, but even they managed it (the sole success as Christians, btw).

My problems began almost as soon as I switched to 'Normal' difficulty level (of which more elsewhere) and I scoured the USENET for groups supporting STW users. I found none and, as well as abandoning the game in sheer frustration, I only made sporadic searches for support groups and found nothing... for years. ~:pissed:

Other game obsessions took over but I came across MTW in a shop recently, thought about it for a moment but stopped short of buying it, thinking I hadn't really mastered STW-proper itself. I ran a Google search on STW today, just for the heck of it and am exceedingly pleased and relieved to have come across this one.

I can't imagine why I've not found it before, as it seems to have been going for a good couple of years. Things seem to have moved on apace, as well, so I've a fair bit of catching up to do. Pointers to downloadable patches for STW which I should be getting would be more than welcomed.

I've taken the time to look through plenty of thread titles and fully read a small selection of threads already and am surprised not to find ones relating to what I'm about to ask about.

In the meantime, thanks to all for making this place possible. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi and welcome to the .Org ~ ~

I'm pretty sure that if you told us about the kind of problems that you are having, some kind soul would answer you questions and help you over in the sword dojo. Ah yes, the Sword dojo, thats the place where all the STW'ers goto for general chit caht about that fine game. Also, you may want to have a look at a couple of the guides (Esp Froggy's Unit Guide) to get some hints and tips.

Anyway, may your stay here be a happy one

Welcome to the Org EatYerGreens (love the name!). ~

I hope we can help you make up for any lost time. Don't be bashful with questions, comments or sharing your own experiences. We don't bite around here...well, most of us anyway.~D

I'm personally more of a meat man, but, still, welcome to the Org !
And if we can't agree on food, at least I'm sure we'll agree on this: ~

Btw, dunno if you're aware of it, but it'd be a shame to waste your money on MTW alone: there is a thing called The Battle Collection, which is around 20-30 bucks, and includes both MTW and VI (the expansion pack, which is kinda good to have).
You can find it on Amazon, but EB games and certainly others carry them as well.

Have fun and enjoy your stay ! ~:grouphug:

Welcome to the org!

Please fire away your questions and also use the search feature Im sure you will see results.

It is infact a waste to buy MTW now that RTW (Rome: Total War) is on the verge of release (pun not intended). It will be with full 3D sprites and should be cool.

Also you might want Mongol Invasion for Shogun, a neat expansion in my opinion

Thanks to you all for the very warm welcome. I'm still getting adjusted and it'll take me a while to get used to all the strange and hard-to-pronounce names ~D

I see you're all eagerly anticipating the RomeTW but even the MTW & VI are news to me. I've been reading the other threads with a growing sense of bewilderment at the amount of exotic unit types and extra features which have gone into the program itself. I've a lot of catching up to do.

I get the impression that MTW is very old-hat to the regulars here (lots of talk of 'mods' from those who've BTDT,GTTS and are bored with the stockversion) but, as I said, I've been looking for a forum for ages and still want to discuss long-bottled stuff about the pleasures and frustrations of STW (plain vanilla version). Hopefully this won't utterly bore people, nor generate responses along the lines of "well, in MTW that's not a problem as you can do such & such..." ~

In the meantime, I was going to ask something about the TW 'engine' in general. There's a BBC series I've seen (has run for at least two years, plus some repeats) where a team of four people re-fight historical battles, two as generals and two as lieutenants, against an AI opponent force. I forget the title (possibly 'Time Commanders', or some such). I've not seen MTW, beyond the screenshots I've seen in the FAQ guide and they're very reminiscent of what they used in this show. Is there any connection with EA/CA?

If so, I'd certainly like to give MTW a try.

IIRC Time Commanders, and a new show on the US's "The History Channel" are using Creative Assembly's new, yet to be released, 3D game engine from Rome:TotalWar. BTW, CA switched publishers from EA to Activision.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I'm mildly embarassed about asking this now. I suffered a technical glitch while trying to quote someone's post in another thread not long after posting that; repeatedly got a message saying an email had gone off to the site techs, and then got a slow-moving progress bar while pages were refreshing, so I took out everything after .org from the URL, to force a change of page. That didn't work so I tried totalwar.com and, lo and behold, there was a reference to the Time Commanders series on that page.

I followed the link and I've just spent a fascinating half-hour reading the historical background notes. Disappointed to learn that there were 16 programmes and I reckon I only got to see two or three of them. Must have clashed in the schedules with one of my other favourites on a different channel... ~:( Would have been nice to find out how the various teams got on but putting that on the page would be a spoiler to anyone who hadn't seen it yet - which includes me. Wait long enough and these things get repeated.

Having seen this thing in action, if this is what we can look forward to from R:TW, not to mention added layers of complexity from the campaign side, then I think I'm sold. ~D

I know, I know.... the other day I said I'll try MTW/VI first. :tomato:
