Well, short version is a lot of text editing and painting in graphics programs. The best way to understand modding is reading the guides by Duke John and Starkhorn in the Repository and Alchemist lab. It's not as hard as you may think, I know becouse I had no experiens before the XL mod. MTW is the first game I have modded and it's great fun. The first thing I did was adding a hero, then a faction and then more factions. You should try it!

How do you add a hero?
Quite an easy way is to download Gnome Editor. This allows you to edit certain text files that control parameters in the game. You can change how fast units move, how far weapons shoot, how much they cost, who they are available to and so on. I've had a bit of a play with it. You can make long range, explosive arrows that would make Rambo cry or knights that ride like the wind. Tons of possibilities.
Is this the sort of thing you were after. It's quick and easy and doesn't require any know how.

How do you add a hero?
You go into the folder \campmap\names\ and open the ..HEROES.TXT
I made a danish hero called Absolon
"Archbishop", "Absalon", 1128, 3, 3, 4, 4, 6, mightywarrior3, GENERAL, ID_DENMARK, -1 //Archbishop, builder and great general of the danes!
1128 is the year he was born, the following numbers are command, dreed, piety, aqumen, and loyalty
mightywarrior is type of vice, General is the type of hero and ID_Denmark is were he will be trained (ID_Limbo will make him come in any province were you train a unit)
The name of the hero allso needs to be added in the \Loc\Eng\Names.txt
Hope this helps

It looks very simple ~:) .
So 1128 is effectively when the guy appears?

It is fairly simple. 1128 is the year he was born, so he will appear 16 years later.

There are also some easy mod tools that have been built available on www.totalwarcenter.com. (is it allowed to post a link to that site?) They have a whole forum about mods.
