a newbie is a person that doesn't put their arqs in wedge formation when it rains. they don't know how to talk with allies while in battles. they still think their cav can beat spearmen (unless they are magyar, in which their cav can beat spears). having never played online battles, they are a newbie until they lose their smile from server defects. and they are a newbie until they dream of the battle they had a week prior http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

New to the class he's playing in, if he's a newbie to the game, he hasn't played the game very much, just a few times (with little succes),newbie to online play, only played online a few times (with little succes),newbie to a forum less than 10 posts.

just my vision though ,I'm 100% sure people will disagree.

Some signs you might be a newbie:

If you don't have the map: Ob Horselands you are probably a newbie.

If you don't line up your muskets when you setup on a flat map, you are probably a newbie.

If you don't know that "T is for Talk" you are definately a newbie.

If you host competitive 5 player games with 43333 koku, you are a newbie.

If the only way you can win is by defending a mountain, you are a newbie.

If you ignore all of your allies requests for support, you are probably a newbie.

If you can't move your entire army as a group, you are a newbie in my book.

If you rush in the first 10 seconds of the game you might just be a newbie. If you then complain that your allies left you out to dry (because they didn't follow your rediculous charge) then you are a newbie.

If you don't know who AmpMortog is, you are a newbie in my book.

If you take all of one unit type, you are probably a newbie.

In short, if you can't beat me-- you are a newbie.

10 seconds may be too early. How about 1 minute?

That was very poetic, bachus.

A newbie is a player that doesn't compare in skill to 'vets'. He is a player who doesn't know battlefield tactics, an how this game works. He doesnt protect his general (see that too often). And he needs guidance from long-time players/'vets'.

Everybody is going to Hell.

Not all people share the same religion. And each religion claims nonbelievers will all go to Hell. So, we will all go to Hell.

Newbieness is the same. Everybody has a different opinion of what a newbie is. So, in a way, we are all newbies because there is no standard that is universal.

This means that despite what YOU think... Magy is a newbie. Koc is a newbie. All the vets are newbies claiming to be more than they are! All of youz are newbies!

Anyone who claims to NOT be a newbie is in denial!

Everybody is a newbie.

Now, we can move on...

GAH!

damn dion thats nearly half the lsit that applys to me!....oh well i wont deny im a newbie to alot of aspects to online shoggy, the reason i came on anyway was to make the game a bit more challenging...being a newbie is okay...everyone starts somewhere, you just gotta keep on practicing, and in my book theres two kinds of newbies...
1)an actual new person to the game or online elements of it
2) the knid that are assholes, little punks, that are the epitome of all that is un desirable in a human being let alone online player who gets called a newbie for there almost child like behavior.

please dont get the two mixed up folks, aurigato http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

If what Jerry Garcia says is true then I must be a professional newbie! I always lose my general, I always depend on my veteran teammates to save my butt, and I never have known any battlefield tactics except RUNAWAY! RUNAWAY! I only play 2v2 and up games because it allows me to blame my partners for my losses!! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Well, a bit more seriously, it is clear that it is the experince which sets apart the newbie from the vet, but I doubt that anyone can quantify this. Although I agree with Bach on most of the points: manouvering, communicating is very important, as well as picking your army (IMO one sure sign of newbieness is to pick an all H2 army). At the end of the day, however, there is only one thing that counts: whether you can learn from your mistakes or not. If not, you are going to be a newbie for ever ...

I hate the term "newbie" because it is mostly used in a derogatory manner.

I guess only the passage of time with all its lessons transforms any one person from "newbie" to "veteran" status in this community.

The only consolation for "newbies" is that fact that EVERYONE is or has been a "newbie"

A newbie is a person fighting online for the first time.

Therefore they are a newbie because no-one knows or has played against them. (except possibly friends)

After the first game they tend to pick up and remember little things and so their skills grow perhaps slowly perhaps quickly.

Newbieness is contagious.

In the event that you should be proven to NOT be a newbie, merely uttering the word "newbie" or hearing somebody else utter the word "newbie" or even reading a post on an online forum that contains the word "newbie" will MAKE YOU A NEWBIE!

So, a vet that goes online and sees a spammer say "GAH! NEWBIE! GAH!" has now been stripped of all that made him a veteran and has metamorphasized into a BORN AGAIN NEWBIE!

GAH!

So... you ask... how can a vet remain a vet and not slide back into newbieness?

Will being blind, deaf and mute help? Sure.

But if a newbie TOUCHES you, you also lose your veteran status and become a newbie!

If you are married, and your WIFE is a newbie... guess what! YOU ARE A NEWBIE TOO! Her touching you will be enough to ensure this!

Buddha is a newbie!
Ghandi was a newbie!
Napoleon started a newbie, became a vet, touched a Russian newbie and as a result lost at Waterloo!

Now, for some 3rd party "objective" sources:

"Blessed are the newbies, for they shall inherit the Kingdom of Heaven."
-- Yehova

"I lost HALF my newbie family in the ovens at Auschwitz! Who are YOU to tell me I am not a newbie?!?"
-- A pissed off Jewish newbie fighting his newbie son's extradition from Israel to the US to stand trial for murder.

"The Americans are paper newbies."
-- Osama Bin Laden, from his base in Sudan prior to the Mogadishu debacle

"We didn't land on Newbie Rock! Newbie Rock landed on US!"
-- Malcolm "The Newbie" X

"I have a dream... that one day our children shall be judged... not by their newbieness... but by the content of their character..."
-- Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

GAH!
