View Full Version : Pursuit bug?
I wonder if anyone encountered this. I had a unit of sacred band cav charge some hastati . The charge penetrated the romans and they routed. My cav then pursued and actually GOT AHEAD of the romans . Then for a whole minute I watched my cav lead the routing romans (in fact it looked more like romans pursuing my cav, but of course they had the white flags!!)
I had to stop the cav, let the hastati pass through and then reattack to finish them off.
Did someone else see this? This is a serious bug :tomato: if it is in the final product.

I had it differently. The Sacred Band would kill a few Romans, get ahead of them and stop. They don't know what to do afterwards so they reform their formation and wait. I have to order them to attack again.
I saw that problem with cav a couple of times. I commanded them to attack routing inf and they sort of ran along beside the routing inf but never really attacked them.
Same here. Was pretty odd to see it happening.
I had a 50-strong unit of SBCav escort off the field a 30-strong unit of Velites today... four Velites dies from the battleground to the edge of the map as they were routing, with the cavalry in their midst the whole time.
There seems to be a centre of each unit that pursuing units try to track. If it happens that one of the individuals of the pursuers comes into contact with one of the pursued, then they fight. But if not, then the pursuing unit acts as kind escorts.
Not particularly keen on refighting those Velites when it comes to a campaign map! Hopefully this gets fixed.

I encountered another bug. Some Velites (looks less than 5) got stuck in a unit of Sacred Band Cavalry while routing. I'm not sure exactly how it happened as I was elsewhere in the battle while the Velites were getting stuck. I think I ordered the Sacred Band Cavalry to attack that Velite before. Anyway, the Velites were trying to run away but were stuck in the formation of the Sacred Band Cavalry. The Sacred Band just stood there not attacking the Velites at all. The Velites, OTOH, made no effort to look for another path to go outside the field of play. Even in Medieval, units routed in a different direction if you block their current direction.

I think the bug with cav charging down routing units is that they try to charge through a unit rather than into them.
When I had some cav chase routing inf they did pass through them and were running ahead of them, but after a point they turned and came back from the other direction.
Has anyone tried the old fashioned 'manual charge through' that we did in MTW? Perhaps that could be better.

this happened exactly to me too, the cav was running besides the inf.

Got to say I noticed some routing troops having difficulty getting of the field, if you strategically place a few units around them they simply run around in a circle in the center of the battlefield forever...

I've tried the swipe, didn't seem to work on a bunch of fleeing romans, none were killed the cav simply went round them or bumped into them and donig nothing.

The pursuit is not awe-inspiring, but the pursuing units DO come back and charge at the routers after they pass them. It just doesn't seem to be that effective.

It happens in my games too.
I also noticed that cavalry sometimes ride in opposite direction when you order them to pursue fleeing enemy.

I've actually had foot troops miss with thier charge, or only a small part "aim" correctly and I fail to get the contact I'm looking for to effectivly wrap up the enemy unit. This seems to happen mostly when you want to charge a failry short distance or you changed thier orders mid-stride. The movement for many units at times just feels a bit unresponsive. I guess the unresponsivness was in STW/MTW a bit though too :)
Wrote about that in some other threads -> have it too, in the last few battles it worked pretty well and i think it happens not that often with light cav, rather more with heavy cav.
I hope they will fix it in the release, the cav should hunt the individual soldiers, not some center or whatever where nobody is.
