I saw a statistic that said 50% of Americans suffered from shyness...was curious if this was true. I'm quite shy myself, it can be a real pain sometimes.

Im usually pretty shy, but if im with some m8s watch out sometimes. Sometimes im the loudest person in the room, and others I just like to sit there and think and listen. But if im alone, 9/10 Im the quiet guy just being shy watching.

That's almost the exact same thing as me. I'm about 7/10 of the time shy, 3/10 loud and up and about.

I'm not as shy as I used to be, but then on the horizon I see the Isle of "I'm to old to care" approaching.
I used to be a bit shy, but then it became my job to collect for the company after we cut people's trees down.
"Ok, we're done, that'll be $1200 please."
Can't be a shy when you're asking for everyone's pay.

If I'm introduced, I can quite happily talk to a new person, and usually make a decentish impression. If I have no-one to introduce me, it's a no-go.

I was very shy in my teens, but gained confidence and boldness later. Today, I lead musical bands, speak in front of audiences, perform on broadcast television, and chair meetings.
I can be quiet at times, but I'm far from shy now.

not me.
I used to be quite shy (actually only about a year ago) but after so many pain enduced thoughts of "why didn't I talk to her?!" and "James your an idiot she obviously fancied you" etc I tried out the "f**& it what do you have to lose?" route. It works like a charm :)

:eeeek: Very shy froggy. I'm even slightly shy with people I have known for years. Text is the only place where the shyness goes away, but only if there is absolutely no one else in the same room as me. I hate people seing what I write if they can also see me.
On the positive side the shyness goes very well with the soft, quiet voice and preference for staying in corners so no one can sneak up on me :gring:

I would consider myself to be quite shy - I definitely have some problems when it comes to smalltalk (in this case the other one will have to take the lead if he/she expects a conversation to develop).
I hate going to larger parties >15 people where I do not really know anyone except for the host.
Fortunately things kind of improved a little bit over the last years (out of necessity - otherwise my job would be somewhat difficult)
I am a singing and dancing rambling fool, never really have any problem dealing with people. No problems with parties where I don't know anyone, just make a quik round and introduce yourselve, 99% of the time we get along fine.
This does NOT aplie when I have smoked something though, it transforms me in a gibbering mass of insecurity. That's why I don't smoke at parties ~D

I am the opposite of shy, so outgoing* I guess. I actually like to step up in front of a number of people to give a speach or to progress with an lecture or something.
Not that I am not stressed on such occassions, but I guess that actually helps so that I don't become overconfident and/or make an idiot of myself ~:joker:
* as long as it's not translated as "the one whose goal is to interact with other people as much as possible", which in fact is not my goal.

I'm not too shy, I'm just no good at small talk, which means that in a party situation, or with people I don't know, I can appear shy. However, I can talk about subjects I enjoy or offer opinions at length without problems.
I am quite shy at times, it really depends on what company I am with and what is being talked about.
I'm pretty confident. Around girls anyway hehe.
And around people I kind of know. Or if I'm drunk.
Shy? No. I am just a successful recluse.

Well, I am shy when confronted with strangers and new situations. But sometimes I can be amazingly confident, so am I really shy?
I do not have much in the way of a social life, but that is also because I lack the social skills of small-talk and feigning interest.

I;m not shy, but I've been called paranoid.

I dont know if im shy, but I border on "Never speaks a word"...
I usually never start conversations and if others try to start one with me, usually all they get is a "yea" or a "nope" and the conversation will stop there unless the other person persists. Whenever Im with friends and we meet someone new, everyone else will greet them while I just acknowledge them with a slight nod. Now that I think about it, apart from hardly ever speaking, I also hardly ever smile. The most anyone will usually get from me is a slight smirk.
Im not paranoid, but I guess I simply dont trust easily, one of the few people that I talk openly with has been trying to get on my good side for more than 10 years now, its surprising that they have bothered with me for so long... However now we are good friends and when around eachother, are almost inseparable.
I suppose you could say that I trade the many, "light" friends for the few "true" friends...

I would consider myself slightly paranoid like Capo. Whenever I'm driving I always check to see if someone is following me and, I sometimes take random turns that make no sense. Also I look into mirrors and windows to see reflections so I can be sure other people aren't looking at me.
I don't really consider myself shy but, I'm not exactly talkative either. I like to consider myself sort of Laconic (Spartan) when I'm around other people. I try not to engage in useless small talk and, when I speak I try to enject humor which people tend to mistake for sarcasm.
I worked at a gas station for a while and, it helped me overcome shyness because, I had to interact with people that were total strangers.

Same here, however even more so in my case... People may not like the fact that I usually have nothing to say to them apart from work-related things, but they always seem to come to me first whenever they need something done, they tend to believe that I am very reliable... Actually, its slightly amusing, they trust me with things quite important to themselves while I wouldnt trust them with a cup of coffee....

I'm shy by nature, but I believe I have learned to conceal it when necessary, provided I'm not caught off guard.
Note that I used the word "conceal" as opposed to "overcome." How well I do so depends on the situation, on a case-by-case basis.
I am currently single, completely and perfectly unattached. A week or so ago I attended an engagement party, knowing fully well beforehand that I would know almost nobody there. In anticipation, I psyched myself up to appear outgoing and to meet some people so that I could convince at least myself that I was enjoying the evening.
The hosts may as well have written "Couples Only" on the invitations. Needless to say, my composure didn't last.

It depends for me. When I'm in an uncomftorbale surrounding with no one I know, I'm very quite, and avoid people. But when I'm with my friends, I can be pretty loud. I think that's because I have strangerophobia... I always try and set on the end of a row at the movies, and try and sit next to people I know. My parents always worry that I don't get out of the house much... deffintly odd for a 16 year old dude's parents wanting him to get out of the how. I guess I'm just weird.... and that's the way I like it.
I tend to become more outgoing at concerts since I'm really into the music, but that's mainly because I don't give a damn about people who disagree with my musical taste. ~:p

Exactly the same with me...
