That should wet your whistle. This site is a virtual friggin GOLD MINE for tactical ideas. Courtesy of the good ol' US Military. Enjoy.
I guess I should add that boxes with slashes through them are cavalry.
The main directory of maps is here: http://www.dean.usma.edu/history/dhistorymaps/Atlas%20Page.htm

that link doesnt work at me
There was a link to a Polish site... with battle of Tannenberg... very nice. Good pics. You can see nice tactics there too.
Worth a look. I just don't recall which thread had the link to it...
Just look around... You'll find it...

Some of those battle maps have given me some great ideas.
I have a couple of new 1v1 formations I'd like to try out.
The whole idea is, of course, to flank your enemy on one side while holding on the other.
There are a number of ways to do that. One idea I've got is to stretch the center thin and try to draw fire from 4 enemy musks onto 2 of my thin center musks. Then I have 2 extra musks to flank with. It has to be done somewhat quickly, but I think it could work.
Old tactic Dion http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif Use right click + alt to change facing and march immediately at the flanks and fire him out.
It is amazing how slow are most defenders...hehe.

Yeah, thats exactly the trick I had in mind.
I havent tested it out yet, but with the deployment formation I'd be starting with I would have lots of options -- including the "thin center" technique.
Someone should develope a little program that lets you test various deployment formations. It could be as simple as a "Paint" program with some tiles representing the various units (Cavalry, Hvy. Infantry (M/ND), Spears, etc.).
That way I could post my formation and show some of the opportunities it would allow.
Then again, maybe I will just keep it a secret!

I do this kinda thing all the time when I'm at work. I sit behind a desk at a Department store and answer phones, so I'll have a stretch of free time every once in a while. I'll just sit there and draw out different formations and decide in what situation to use them. It's kind of helped me develop new strategies while I'm playing, because I can start coming up with them quicker in the middle of a battle. I don't actually use most of the ones I draw at work, unless I come up with something good. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Me too Nabu...I want a little computer program to help me draw them out.
IMHO the maps are fairly useless without verbal accounting of the events.
IMHO maps are an excellent aid to an actual description of events, but they can themselves describe little which can be applied.
The maps you linked lack even proper legends.

Yeah, they do, but I still find them useful. I'm used to deciphering maps like that, and I've got a good idea what all the symbols stand for. Particularly interesting to me is Alexander's use of Cavalry-- it seems like he would start w/ Cav on both sides, then swing one flank around (either behind his lines, or the enemies), and double up his cav on the side he was pressing.
Seemed to work for him.
