Why?
Well 2 reason's really;
A. I work on IVR's - and for the more complex ones we use place holder phrases recorded internally all the time. We often don't receive the finished product from the voice talent house until very close to release.
B. The voices in the demo are sooooo bad - compared to S:TW and M:TW. Check out this link to 4 more Gamespot vidoes - at the bottom.

The battering ram voice (vid #3)just CAN'T be the real thing, it is such crap! :tomato:
I just watched vid #4 - OMG - the voice sounds like me - and I'm a guy from New Jersey! ~ There is NO way that these can be in the release. Please someone tell me I am right here.

I wish you are right.. ~

yup i am in total agreement-the voices are so bad that they have to be temporary........
I'll be so crushed if we don't have the option (like Japanese in STW) of either English voiceovers or Latin... ~;)
Preferences.txt may be spilling a bean: English:TRUE so there could be FALSE too. Latin?
Isn't it likely there are localized versions? German, French, Spanish... Sounds more likely.
Anyway this is a point where there is an advantage for not being a native english speaker... The voices sound just as annoying as any person speaking english. Doesn't really bother me. Of course, original language would be better, as unacchievable as that might be...
What does bother me is content (like barbarians calling themselves barbarians) but that's another subject.

Oooohhhh... though MadKow is probably right, it's likely a localisation setting. Sigh ~:) I mean, localisation is a good thing and all, just wish there were historical localisation as well, hehe.

I really hope there will be alternate, better voice clips if not an entirely new set removing the demo ones.
:sacrifices several medium sized animals in the hopes this will help...remembers 'Bruce the Fake Australian' doing a turn as the Romans....throws a couple of cows on the altar:

Mine's set to false, and its still in English. So yeah, there's probably localized settings, just not yet.

Well we can only HOPE that the voices we've heard in the demo and movies are placeholder sounds. I wouldn't hold my breath though. I know for a fact there is (or was?) a more respectable sounding voice actor used for Roman generals. I first heard it in that special DVD video for people who bought the special pre-release version of RTW. The general's voice was excellent, of respectable tone and presence and in an English accent to boot. I cannot recall exactly what he said but I do recall him yelling, "The Seleucids? Hah! I've wiped better off the bottom of my boots!" That voice was far superior to the gruff sounding one heard in most of the 'general gives a speech' videos.
Barring the one voice actor used for the tutorial voice over and the narration on the special DVD video the other voices stink, badly. It sounds like CA went with second rate voice actors of the Saturday morning cartoon variety.

You call Simpsons second rate? ~:joker:
Well, my General's advisor sounds exactly like the scottish janitor from Simpsons: "The Enemies arrre crrrrushed!".
Gotta love that. ~;)
P.S.: On a second thought, it's more a mixture between the janitor and the old sailor. "The Enemies arrre crrrrushed! Harrr, Harrrr!"

Pray to the Gods of Gaming you are right Barkhorn.
Despite my normal pessimism, I can almost convince myself that you are. Remember the Parthian faction video? Some found the 'Arab' accent annoying because it was historically inappropriate but you could see why CA had gone Parthians -> dessert faction -> dessert = Arab sounding.
However, though it may have been the wrong accent, it at least was professionally done and chosen for a reason (if not an accurate one). I find myself hoping that a company which went to that much trouble wouldn't use such cheesy accents as the ones on these videos.

Our IVRs are homegrown - we code/host ourselves. And charge customers for the initial prompt coding and then per minute for what they use.
We offer a great solution for small to mid-size companies who cannot afford to buy a system themselves.

Bad news: I quote from Gamespy
if only the voiceovers were a little better Now that I think means A. there in Enghish ~ and B. they still suck.
OMG! I just watched those videos and the voices are in English with a f***ing american accent?
That is terrible! I could accept an English accent as this is more "classical" but "Gee mom gosh darn diddly that there wall has collapsed jimbob" is just not on....

While I think that no English should be spoken, I'd like to let you know that not all Americans talk like that. ~:p
It's called hyperbole....
but still I don't want anything american in my game about Rome.

Is it just me, or do the Cretan Archers sound a little like Bostonians? (No offense intended if you are from Boston.) "Cretan Aahchas!" anyone? ~D
I get a sick, twisted pleasure from hearing them. ~:p
By the way, I'm from New Jersey. So I have a perfect command of the English language. ~D

They made me cringe too, but to me it sounded like a Liverpool (UK) accent.
