Does anyone know the earliest year jannissaries become available? I am trying to get a jannisary army together to fight the horde, but its 1200-something and I still can't build them. I have my grand mosque and military academy in constantinople. I have VI, FYI.

I think they do not become available until the start of the late period.I normally make them available in all periods by editing the unitprod. This isn't cheating as such as you still have a hell of a lot of building to do before you can train the almighty Jannys.I think the year is 1325 or something.

Janissaries come online in 1205, assuming you've got all the prereqs. They are definately High-era troops (though they still rock in late, but anyway). I modded my build_prod to make make the military academy require a mosque, not a grand mosque, so that I can have more than one province producing them, in case that appeals to you. ~D

Okay, to be sure, you need a grand mosque, military academy, and master spear and armorer's guild for JHI and for JI you need above except master bowyer and sowrdsmith's guild?
That mod to build with mosque only sounds cool, except I don't know anything about modding. How do you do that? (or is it covered somewhere in this forum ah well I'll look for it)
Jannissaries in high is just not fair. Even in late I kick butt with them; I just love jannissary infantry, CMAA's with a bow (actually my JI wipes the floor with CMAA's hahaha). I don't think anyone else in high has a better unit than JHI.

Yeah, that sounds like the right group of reqs. Modding is really easy, if you can pick up the GnomeEditor. And you can, right here!

What you'll want to do -- open up the file called "crusader_build_prod" in your MTW directory (after making a backup, obviously). Scroll down to row 21, "Military Academy," then scroll over to column 7, "building conditions." I've set mine to the following, which you could just copy and paste in there:"{{CASTLE13,UNIVERSITY},{CASTLE13,MOSQUE}}"
You do need the quotes in there, so keep them. And now you've got a military academy with a mosque, rather than grand mosque. The castle 13 reference is for the highest level of castle, just to keep things balanced -- no erecting Military Academies at the keep level.
And you're right, no one has anything that can stop JHI in High. And they shred Mongol Heavy Cavalry. On the other hand, I don't much fancy going up against CMAA with Ottomon Infantry, so . . .

Marquis of Roland, just download 'Gnome Editor', it lets you change all the stats, cost, productions requirements...etc of units. It's also pretty idiot proof, as long as you don't do anything stupid you should be fine!
Sorry, I dont have a link, but have a look around the forum and you should find one.

Thanks for the link Tom ~
P.S.
I was talking about Janissary infantry vs. CMAA, not Ottoman infantry vs. CMAA, although I've seen ottomans go above and beyond expectations before. Once I flanked a Swiss armored pike unit with Ottos and they swiss-cheesed the swiss.

Yeah, I knew that Marquis; sorry I was opaque. ~:joker: I just meant, that while the Turks' infantry can be overpowered with their various Janissaries, their other infantry is so fragile that it would be split apart by a head-on confrontation with even the High era Catholic units. Plus, I can never keep all of their hybrids apart; all I know is that every unit in the Turkish army shoots arrows if you just ask politely enough. And I'm frankly amazed that the Ottomans were able to rip apart some SAP, even from the flank -- they must have been reeeeally well pinned on something.

Yea, they were totally exhausted in the desert, and already engaging some JHI, plus ottos had +3 valor for "pride", so I guess not a really good example, hehehehe.

It is possible to get more than one province producing JHI without altering the build_prod file.
The Military Academy is not a unique building, though the Grand Mosque is. So once you have built your MA, knock down the GM and rebuild it elsewhere.
But TBH, one province producing a unit of JHI every turn is usually enough.

That logic hardly works. If it gives an advantage it's cheating.
Feel free to do it, but that justification doesn't hold up.
