View Full Version : Demo Performance

(Note: I realize that this should be posted in the Colloseum, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I am once again a junior patron. After the forum switch, the site simply refused to give me my 'new' password, and I can't start a new account under the same email and blah blah blah... anyways, The Peach is gone and Katana has taken his place.)

Everyone else seems to be raving about how great the demo performs, but I have not had a similar experiance, sadly. After reading a couple forum posts, I was convinced that I was in for a graphical feast. I was sadly dissapointed. My specs:

AMD 2500+ Proc
512 MB DDR Ram
Radeon 9800 Pro (256)
Windows XP

I run the demo at 800x600 with medium-low settings and small unit size, and it still runs at like 10 fps during a major (i.e. around 500 fighter) infantry engament, plus it always chugs during cav and elephant charges. I have also experianced some strange, strange effects with fire arrows, where is someone dies from one parts of the entire screen take on the 'fire' look for a couple seconds.

Do you need a RadeonX to run this game well, or is my system just underperforming? Is there anyway to fix this fire bug?

Thanks,
Katana

I know that MTW would not run well unless you had the latest version of Direct X. Did you install it? The very latest version, not just a very recent one.

I have DirectX 9.0c I believe, though I will re-install just in case. Is that still the latest version?

Your system is definitely underperforming, assuming things like you've got a motherboard appropriate to your CPU/AGP-8x/etc. I'm running on an Athlon XP 2200, 9700 Pro, and am running 60 FPS at 1280x1024, 2x Antialiasing.

I'd get the latest Catalyst drivers, and DX 9.0c, and give it another go.

The weird red triangles on arrows (doesn't need to be fire arrows, regular arrows hitting a target do the same thing) is still an unsolved issue, though some have gotten it to go away by raising or lowering their quality (pixel dimensions).

Before putting down the game (any game), realize that the problem most likely is between the screen and the chair. Get the newest drivers for your vcard, motherboard and other apparatuses (:P), newest Direct X, clear your spy/adware and check for viruses. If this doesn't do it, start tweaking the game settings. If you don't know how, now is a good time to learn; you'll have to do this sometime in the future either way. Open preferences.txt after you've tried all the afromentioned fixes. Only then ask other people for help; better yet, try searching if the forum has this feature enabled.

ive got everything on medium settings at 800x600

my pc is

AMD2600+
512ram
nForce2 MOBO
Geforce4 MX440 128mb

I've got xp home, with dx9.c and sometimes the game runs well, other times it doesn't. I'm pretty learned when it comes to system performance so my pc is running optimal. My card is fairly crap, but still should run well judging from what other people have been saying (gforce2 runs it so well!)

Maybe its a directX problem, or just the demo is running some weirdo video rendering etc etc.

Hopefully it's the demo...

My GF2 runs it like a dream on 800x600x16 with all the excess eyecandy dropped out. Unit detail is medium.

I am running it quite smoothly on 1024x768 with 2xAA on a Athlon XP 2700 / 512Mb / Radeon 9700 Pro, with directx 9.0b and catalyst 4.8. Yes, you need to fiddle with your system a bit. It should run very well.

I have a similar system only intel 2.8 w HT and the 128 ati card. Although it is counter-intuitive, turn up all the graphics settings to maximum including all the special effects check boxes. That fixed the strobe lights for me ( I also use a higher resolution although not maxed).

Sorry milord, didn't mean to impeach on your immensly valuable time by forcing you at gunpoint to respond to my thread.

IRT Topic

I'll try updating my motherboard and videocard drivers, but I got the latest Catalysts on Saturday, so unless an udpate has been released since then I could be out of luck. ~:mecry:

I've been thinking about dropping another 512MB of RAM into my system, raising it to 1 Gig. Does anyone know if this would affect my RTW performance?

No, it wouldn't, if you refuse to go through the list I gave you.

Katana/The Peach - contact Tosainu or Gregoshi by PM on the forums and they will fix you up with your old username - you may need to prove who you are, eg. with the email address you originally signed on, but they are very helpful. I had the same problem and they got me re-instated pretty fast.

Hey, it's no biggie. I don't mind using another name, and my old post count was never very high, so I'll think I'll avoid the bother. Thanks anyways.

Okay, I'm gonna swallow my pride and extinguish this baby flame war. I find you're automatic assumption that I'm a computing n00b to be offensive, but I guess everyone makes assumptions sometimes. Rest assured, all of my drivers are up to date. I apologize for my rude conduct before... that said, there was some good logic behind the animosity. No one is forcing you to read this thread or reply to my or anyone else's posts and you're welcome to just ignore my posts if you think I'm an idiot or whatever.

Go start, run "dxdiag" i think thats it.

I think this game runs better on DX9.b not 9.c

1.1Ghz 384 Ram 128 GeForce FX5200, RTM runs fine on the 800 setting with medium graphics and a little choppy with them turned up all the way
