It looks like Group Formations are a key part of an advanced player's strategy. In what ways do you use group formations and how effective are they?
theyr are many topics and links about this stuff.... go and read it need to much time to explain it here...

To begin with I have a #1 Group (left), #2 Group (center) and #3 Group (right). Sometimes I have a #4 Group (cavalry), a #5 group (ranged units) and a #6 Group (infantry).
if the enemy is attacking my right, I pull #3 back a bit, push up #1 and rotate #2 to look to the enemy (turn right abit).
#1 tries to flank, #2 supports #3, and #3 attempts to hold.
If i get charged, I click #5 backward, #6 forward, and #4 toward a flank, etc.
Being able to change group facing is critical.

the essence of battle is group formations....in shogun non of the typical rampaging horde stuff works as well as it might in real life, and even then you either had to have endless numbers of ravangers or have a supremly weak and in-experience battle wise opponent, standard formations are based around what your army's goal is and what the enemys goal is, for an simple example, say takeda is attacking...archers arnt going to be as effective as fast units but say musketeers, they can shoot down the takeda cav charge as it comes, but if any of the enemy get to your musks 1) they'll get slaughtered and 2) they rout...half your ashigaru army routs if not all causing mass panic, so you put yari soilders infront of them, the musks would be in a thin line and the spearmen a tight formation facing towards the charge aswell.....really group and unit formations is just pure common sense, if your going to march into a battle just running around willy nilly then dont expect to win too often if at all....hope i helped http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif if jsut a lil'

Another thing to be aware of is to modify your groups as you go along. Depleted flank units are moved to my center to hide behind the fresh troops, routed units are taken out of groups so they don't screw up movement, and sometimes units are shuffled between groups for tactical reasons.
Groups shouldn't be static, they need to change with the battle situation.

Gah!
Strange how Fast's groupings and Krast's are so similar.
Who taught that wolf, anyhow?
